Hacker? Cracker? Learn the Difference by Reene

First, let’s get one thing perfectly clear: A hacker would never want your account. As a matter of fact, hackers do not want anyone’s account.

Hackers do not break into bank accounts, seek to topple the government or write the viruses that make your life miserable. They don’t speak in l33t, break into computers or vandalize websites.

Believe it or not, they aren’t interested in the slightest in doing any of these things, and get kind of insulted when people keep saying that they do.

For quite some time now there has been a great deal of confusion among Neopians (and indeed some of the Neopets Staff themselves) about what, exactly, a hacker is. I will admit that even to myself it can be a confusing topic, but my goal with this article is to clarify the difference between the words ‘hacker’ and ‘cracker’ while briefly touching on ‘scammers’ and ‘script kiddies’ since they relate to the topic at hand. For starters, let’s look at a few definitions from The Jargon File (version 4.4.7):

Cheat Information: Scamming Revealed by Luis Aguilera

I have come across a little hacking device for hotmail. This little program, often disguised as “My pic.jpg” would you like to accept this file.exe or “refresher.exe” has been floating around msn messenger for a while. A “Your computer is out of memory, please close some programs and try again” message will pop up and it will boot the person out of the messenger and prompts them to sign back in. The program brings up a fake sign in window and signing in through there just leads to sending the hacker your password. The easiest way to avoid getting hacked is to never accept .exe files, which could be hacking programs or harmful viruses. Another good way of getting hacked is through IP. Many of the people I know have a little program called “sub seven” in which they can hack your PC. Never accept files from anybody you don’t know, even if they are not .exe These people use an MS Dos command that can bring up the IP of the person they are transfering a file to. Then they use the IP with the sub seven program to hack you. – da_pimp55@hotmail.com

How to Identify a Scammer by ajrcz

How to identify a scammer

Unfortunately, there are plenty of scammers in Neopia. And I was unfortunate enough to run into some of these people, but luckily I didn’t get scammed. Sometimes in shops: If the here icon to report the shop is right next to the username, it’s a scam. And sometimes people will scam you by neomail. Chain letters aren’t as bad a scam though, as ones directly asking for your password. Remember: Neopets will never ask for your password via e-mail OR neomail. One scammer I met couldn’t even spell Faerie right…*shakes head* Remember that Neopets can also spell it’s own words. Also, sometimes it’s good to put two and two together to see if you’re being scammed. One time, I put one of my rarest items up for trade. Then, I got a neomail asking for my username and password from contests2000, who is now frozen. Here’s the two and two together: I had a rare item up for trade, and I got a neomail asking for my username and password. Remember to be careful, but have fun too! – ajrcz@allways.net

Scammed: A True Story

Before I start, I would like to point out that this occurred to a friend of mine on the 6/4/2002. She lost 1 million neopoints which she spent over 7 months making. Fortunately, she was able to make a copy of the chat and send it to me so I can warn everyone out here. In no way has this conversation been edited. I have simply make comments here and there. My friends name here will be AEbeautychick02.

BabyBlue12988: hiyaz

BabyBlue12988 contacted AEbeautychick02 straight after she posted on the NeoChat about her 1 million. This first giveaway about this scammer is contacting AEbeautychick02 straight away after her post. Suspicious.
