This method does work exceedingly well. However, it isn’t exactly foolproof. There is one opponent (that I know of) who seems quite adept at wrecking the game plan early on.
Strangely enough, that opponent is Squire Meekel. His 3rd marker is often placed to prevent move four or six. It is *usually* still easy to win however, which leads me to believe it was purely chance, rather than strategy 😉
