Users have the option of [[Rainbow Pool|colouring]] their [[Neopet]] or [[Petpet]] ''Grey'', which is a design similar to the Grey Faerie released on April 9, 2004. Key traits of the Grey colour include red and baggy eyes, weak body movements and looking sad even when happy. Unlike the Grey Faerie, Neopets or Petpets coloured Grey do not lose their ability to use magic, as made apparent by Neopets use of [[Faerie Abilities]] in the [[Battledome]]. Because Grey is just a colour and just looks sad, a Neopets's mood isn't affected when coloured or if a ''Grey'' Petpet is attached.
 
Petpets were actually capable of being painted Grey on September 4, 2003, before the current design was ever released. Since the new design, artwork of the Grey Petpet have been updated. Some Petpets are naturally coloured Grey, and don't bear any of the characteristics of the colour. There is also one permanently Grey coloured Petpet called [[Frowny]].


As of December 2006, there are 36 different Neopets and 39 different Petpets which can be painted Grey.
