The Battledome is a turn based game in which users can have their Neopets spar against either computer-controlled characters or other users' Neopets. Battling is a very popular activity on the Neopets website, and there is an entire NeoBoard section dedicated to the game. There are thousands of items that exist solely to be used in the Battledome, and plots often involve fighting in the Battledome against specific opponents.

History[edit]

The Battledome began testing on November 15, 2000. It was officially released as part of the Hunt for the Battledome plot on January 11, 2001. The Battledome became wildly popular upon its release, and it remained largely unchanged for over a decade.

On October 17, 2012, the Battledome was closed down for renovations. The new and improved Battledome began closed beta testing on October 26, 2012. This new Battledome sported updated art, new comic-style animations, and a prize system to reward users for battling. The ability system was also completely overhauled and single player challengers were given multiple difficulty levels. The improved Battledome was opened up to all users on November 9, 2012, and it is still active today.

Gameplay[edit]

Battledome fights are one-on-one. Neopets that have fewer than one hit point, are hungry, or are sick may not start a new fight in the Battledome. To win a fight, the player must reduce their opponent's hit points to zero before their own hit points are depleted. If both players reach zero HP within the same turn, the fight is declared a draw.

Battledome matches are turn-based. Before each turn, each player selects up to two pieces of battledome equipment and up to one ability. After both players have chosen their equipment and abilities, the turn plays out and the hit point damage dealt to each player is displayed. If both of the competitors still have health remaining, another turn begins. Play continues in this manner until one or both players runs out of HP.

Icons, Attacking, and Defending[edit]

In the Battledome, offense and defence are dealt in units known as icons. Icons can be either offensive or defensive. Both offensive icons and defensive icons are divided into seven different elemental types:

AirBDI.png Offensive Air icon
DarknessBDI.png Offensive Darkness icon
EarthBDI.png Offensive Earth icon
FireBDI.png Offensive Fire icon
LightBDI.png Offensive Light icon
PhysicalBDI.png Offensive Physical icon
WaterBDI.png Offensive Water icon
AirDefence.png Defensive Air icon
DarknessDefence.png Defensive Darkness icon
EarthDefence.png Defensive Earth icon
FireDefence.png Defensive Fire icon
LightDefence.png Defensive Light icon
PhysicalDefence.png Defensive Physical icon
WaterDefence.png Defensive Water icon

Each piece of equipment/ability generates a specific number and type of icons when it is used. For example, the Battle Faerie Shield generates two defensive fire icons and two defensive light icons, while the Meepit Stampede ability deals 10 offensive darkness icons.

The damage dealt by each offensive icon depends on the strength stat of the attacking Neopet:

Strength Damage dealt per icon
< 8 0.5 HP
8 - 12 0.75 HP
13 - 19 1 HP
20 - 34 1.25 HP
35 - 54 1.5 HP
55 - 84 2 HP
85 - 124 2.5 HP
125 - 199 3 HP
200 - 245 4.5 HP
250 - 299 5.5 HP
Strength Damage dealt per icon
300 - 349 6.5 HP
350 - 399 7.5 HP
400 - 449 8.5 HP
450 - 499 9.75 HP
500 - 549 11 HP
550 - 599 12 HP
600 - 649 13 HP
650 - 699 14 HP
700 - 749 15 HP
> 750 16 HP

Defensive icons can block damage from incoming attacks. Defensive icons only block damage that matches their type. For example, defensive air icons can block air attacks, but they cannot defend against water attacks. The amount of damage blocked by each defensive icon depends on the defence stat of the defending Neopet:

Defence Damage blocked per icon
< 8 0.5 HP
8 - 12 0.75 HP
13 - 19 1 HP
20 - 34 1.25 HP
35 - 54 1.5 HP
55 - 84 2 HP
85 - 124 2.5 HP
125 - 199 3 HP
200 - 245 4.5 HP
250 - 299 5.5 HP
Defence Damage blocked per icon
300 - 349 6.5 HP
350 - 399 7.5 HP
400 - 449 8.5 HP
450 - 499 9.75 HP
500 - 549 11 HP
550 - 599 12 HP
600 - 649 13 HP
650 - 699 14 HP
700 - 749 15 HP

Battledome Equipment[edit]

Main article: Battledome Equipment

Users can equip up to eight pieces of Battledome equipment on each of their Neopets. If a user has the Equip ALL THE THINGS boon activated, they can equip a ninth piece of equipment on each of their Neopets. Users can equip an item by clicking on it in their inventory and then selecting the Equip ... option from the resulting drop-down menu. Battledome equipment can also be equipped via the Stats page.

Players can use up to two pieces of equipment each turn. Each piece of equipment has its own unique effect. Most equipment deals and/or blocks a certain number of icons. Some equipment restores the player's HP or allows the user to temporarily steal a piece of equipment from an opponent. Other pieces of equipment can freeze the opponent in place, preventing them from attacking or defending. A few pieces of equipment even allow the user to reflect damage back onto their attacker.

Many pieces of equipment have limitations on how much they can be used. While most weapons and armor can be used an unlimited number of times, some can only be used once per battle. Some pieces of equipment disappear entirely after one use. There are also fragile items that have a small chance of breaking after each use.

Faerie Abilities[edit]

Main article: Faerie Abilities

Faerie abilities are skills that Neopets can learn from Aethia at Aethia's Ability Academy by paying blessings. Neopets can only use one ability per turn. Like equipment, each ability has a unique effect. Some abilities are powerful attacks, some restore health, and others defend against incoming attacks. Some abilities prevent opponents from using equipment or abilities.

Abilities are divided into ten different tiers and each Neopet can only know a single ability from each tier at a time. Many abilities have a limitation on how frequently they can be used. Some abilities can only be used once every few rounds, while other abilities can only be used once per battle or once per day.

Trivia[edit]

  • The 2007 April Fools prank said the Battledome was cancelled. Users were unable to access the Battledome Chat, the Hidden Tower, or shops that stocked weapons, until the next day. Premium members were able to access those areas if they switched to portal mode.
