The Altador Cup was a gaming plot on Neopets which took place between June 1, 2006 and August 4, 2006. It is a sporting event with teams from sixteen Neopian worlds participating.

The role of the user and the system of play is still unclear. It is believed that either players will be supporting (and maybe betting) on their team, or that they will be be playing as part of their team in a localised competition rather than a community-wide competition. Users could select the team they wished to join/support and change teams if they wished until June 8, 2006.

Yooyuball

instructions.gif

The game played to win the Altador Cup was called Yooyuball. Gameplay appears to be based on Jai alai, where players carry a ball in a sling and charge down the field, trying to throw the ball into the other team's net to score a goal. The ball is actually a rolled up Petpet called a Yooyu, a creature native to Altador. There are a variety of different Yooyus used in the game, which gives the sport an unpredictable twist, requiring a team to alter its strategy depending on the type of Yooyu currently in play.

  • Fire - This Yooyu must be transferred very quickly between team-mates, since keeping it too long can result in some rather unpleasant burns.
  • Snow - This Yooyo freezes the muscles of those playing with it, making passing and scoring very slow.
  • Mutant - This Yooyu is extremely unpredictable and will often move in crazy patterns.
  • Faerie - This Yooyu floats lightly through the air, leaving players wonder when it will drop down low enough for them to capture and pass it.

Before each game of Yooyuball begins, users choose the formation they want their players to stand in and select which direction the would like to move the ball down the field. Using the mouse, users point at the player they want to move around. This will select the player. The selected player can be guided around the field using the mouse. When a player has possession of the ball, clicking the left mouse button throws the ball.

If a user wanted to unselect a player, they pressed the spacebar or the S key. When none of the players were selected, they can clicked anywhere on the field to move the closest player to the position they clicked on. To toggle between players, users press the left and right arrow keys (or the A and D keys). Users can activate a player when toggling between them by pressing the spacebar. Pressing the Shift key to moves players back to their starting positions.

A new rule was added on June 24, 2006, which would make the Yooyu jump from a Keeper's hands if is stayed there longer than 5 seconds. It is believed this was implemented because too many users were scoring a single goal then letting the Keeper hold onto the ball for the remainder of play, scoring an automatic win.

The Altador Cup Tournament consisted of sixteen teams representing the lands of Neopia. Tournament play was single-elimination, which meant the team which won a match moved on to the next round while the team that lost was eliminated from play. Sixteen teams were randomly seeded and matched up, and after the eight losing teams were eliminated the eight winning teams were again randomly matched up and moved on to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, four more teams were eliminated while the remaining four headed to the semifinals. Semifinals determined which two teams fought in the final match.

The Committee

committee.gif

The Altador Cup Committee is a group of officials who carefully examine each play, making sure the rules of Yooyuball are followed. Players or fans who feel something needs to be reviewed can file a petition, and the committee will decide whether or not to rule on the matter. Once both sides of the issue are heard, the committee gathers in its private chambers to discuss the situation and vote on an appropriate course of action.

While some might feel they are too strict, the committee's decisions play a vital role in maintaining the integrity of the game, and the committee members' actions are always motivated by a desire to protect the game's best interests.

Team rosters

Sixteen Neopian worlds participated, each sending a team to compete in the Colleseum in Altador. There was also a seventeenth team from Jelly World, who played as the practice team. While the players themselves are unknown, it's known the Goalkeeper is a Jelly Kougra and one of the forwards a Jelly Kau. Users could only support one team at a time, and could only switch to another between rounds.

Altador
Boasting an airtight defence that averages the least amount of goals allowed per game coming into the tournament, the big question about Altador's squad is whether they're going to be able to generate enough scoring to stay in the hunt for the cup. Then again, with Altador, one goal is usually all it takes.

Brightvale
When the subject of dirty play comes up, one might expect that Darigan or the Haunted Woods would probably be the land that fields the team with the roughest, meanest bunch of (alleged) cheaters. Such an expectation would be incorrect, however, since the most crooked lineup of Yooyuballers actually belongs to... Brightvale? Yes, Brightvale - that hallowed land known for wisdom, learning, and (apparently) sharp jabs to the ribs when no one's looking.

Darigan Citadel
A solid squad with few major weaknesses, the big criticism against this club over the years has been that they play too easy a schedule during the regular season, and as a result they're unprepared when tournament time rolls around. Well, this past season the Darigan Citadel finally relented and added some more matches against a few of the better clubs. So, while they might not have finished as high in the standings as they normally do, Darigan fans are hoping that this year's team will show a little extra toughness during the games that matter most.

Faerieland
Faerieland's Yooyuball squad features one of the most potent offensive attacks in the sport today, but their trio of quick, undersized forwards have a tendency to wear down against larger, more physical opponents.

Haunted Woods
Subscribing to the old saying that "defence wins championships," the Haunted Woods has built its team around shutting down the other squads' forwards and forcing mistakes that create easy scoring opportunities for them. Defeating this bunch takes plenty of discipline and determination, but it can be done....

Kiko Lake
Kiko Lake enters this year's tournament with plenty to prove to its critics. Can they overcome the loss of forward Helmo Timm, the flashy (yet erratic) play of goalkeeper Ditan Colb, and superstar defender Meela Kitah coming off the worst year of her career? If so, Kiko Lake could contend for ownership of the Altador Cup. If not, however....

Krawk Island
Owners of the league's most enthusiastic (and long-suffering) fans, Krawk Island fields a team of loveable losers who've never quite managed to put it all together and win their regional tournament. Led by grizzly forward "Dasher" Soley (who has hinted that he might retire after the tournament), everyone on Krawk Island is hoping this is finally the year that Ol' Dash and the gang bring home the gold.

Kreludor
Though they may not be the most physically gifted team vying for the Altador Cup, many would consider Kreludor's squad to be the most disciplined and fundamentally sound group in the tournament. Befuddling defenders with a torrent of crisp passes and a labrynth of picks and blocks, this unassuming bunch have been known to take their more talented opponents and tie them in knots.

Lost Desert
The Lost Desert fields a lineup that could potentially do lots of damage in the tournament, but this squad also has plenty of questions that still need to be answered. Will Navers's questionable tactics or Azar's disruptive holdout derail their chances of winning it all, or will this veteran bunch come together and make a successful run at the Cup?

Maraqua
Maraqua's clubhouse could best be described as "a house divided." On one side, you have star forward Elon Hughlis, who's more concerned with his personal accomplishments (however great they may be) than actual wins and losses. On the other you have his scrappy (yet far less talented teammates), who endure his antics because of his tremendous ability. As much as Maraqua would love to wash their hands of the situation by trading Hughlis, there's no way any other club would give them equal value in return for taking on their headache.

Meridell
If there's one word to describe Meridell's Yooyuball team, it's "speed." They love nothing more than to get out there and run their opponents ragged. Their superior conditioning enables them to wear down opponents with a relentless flurry of cuts and screens from the opening face-off until the final whistle. It also helps to mask the fact that they aren't the most accurate or powerful shooters.

Mystery Island
Led by the dazzling moves of Teylore Nix and the unstoppable brute force of Volgoth, Mystery Island's squad of Yooyuballers enter the tournament with a punishing offensive arsenal that few teams can hope to keep pace with. If not for the shaky status of their goalkeeping situation, this group would most likely be the odds-on favourites to bring home the cup.

Roo Island
This ragged squad of also-rans and inexperienced rookies received a huge boost when Lilo Blumario, one of the game's top players, decide to sign on and return to his hometown club. He's got what it takes to lead Roo Island to victory... the only question now is, will his new teammates fall in line behind him?

Terror Mountain
Known as "the worst team a fortune can buy" this high priced collection of talented individuals has thus far failed to come together and play as a team. On paper, you would think that a roster with so many good players would be a serious contender to win the Altador Cup. Unfortunately for Terror Mountain's fans, however, the tournament's matches aren't played on paper.

Tyrannia
A few years ago, Tyrannia's general manager assembled a group made almost entirely of players whose original teams had given up on them. After a series of trades and waiver wire acquisitions, Tyrannia began to transform its motley bunch of castoffs into a selfless squad of warriors. Driven by a desire to show everyone who'd written them off how wrong they were, Tyrannia's "Forsaken Five" have gone on to become one of the most successful Yooyuball teams currently playing.

Virtupets
On the surface, other than the obvious talents of star forward Keetra Deile, it would seem like all you can really say about the rest of the Space Station's team is that they're a solid (yet unspectacular) bunch of role players. The thing about Deile, though, is that she uses her brilliance to elevate the play of those around her, making this squad somewhat better than one might initially think. While a run at the cup is highly unlikely, an "upset" in the first or even second round of the tournament wouldn't be all that much of a surprise.

Plot summary

holbieinjury.gif

On June 2 all teams from around Neopia gathered to practice for the games ahead of them, and countless Neopians gathered to watch their favorites take the field. Between practices, most of the players would go and meet their fans, signing autographs. Five days later and the day before the games began, Kiko Lake's Left Forward Holbie Pinnock was injured due to Relle Felson's sling breaking and flying off into Holbie's head, taking him out of the games. Helmo Timm, the one Holbie was replacing, immediately asked to be put back in the game to play, or Kiko Lake would likely not win their games.

On June 9 the first round matches of the Altador Cup tournament begun. Among the eight match ups, two showed to be very interesting. First was "The Moon vs. The Goons," or the Haunted Woods versus Kreludor. It was uncertain who would win, but it would be entertaining.

Second was Brightvale and Kiko Lake. With Kiko Lake suffering from a recent string of injuries fans were devastated to learn they were facing Brightvale in Round One, who are notorious for their roughhouse tactics. They were certainly going to take a cheap shot at Timm and put her back on the sidelines for good.

krawkisland_score.gif

The first round of games ended on June 13. The biggest surprise of the first round was Krawk Island's defeat of Altador. Early in the game, Altador showed no effects from not playing in 1000 years, staggering Krawk Island with their display of passes and shots. Krawk Islander eventually made a comeback, however, ad the game's deciding score was a goal by Krawk Island's "Dasher" Soley, who sent a one-timer sailing past Altador's diving goalie after curling around a screen and receiving a perfect pass from defender Nitri Cassale. Altador attempted to mount a final rally as time ran out, but Garvin Hale easily preserved the win with a routine save.

Faerieland's trio of undersized forwards were no match for the brute strength of Mystery Island's Volgoth, blasting through Faerieland's defense and leading Mystery Island to a surprisingly lopsided win.

Despite the effort of Helmo Timm, Kiko Lake's offense was unable to generate an attack against Brightvale's defence. Though disappointed by the loss, many of Kiko Lake's fans said they were thankful that Timm was able to play the whole game without suffering any further injuries, who promised they'd be back better than ever next year.

altadorcup_round_one.gif

Darigan's defenders broke Terror Mountain's spirit early in the match, making them look unusually disorganised even by Terror Mountain's usual standards. It didn't take long for the match to turn into a rout, and bt that point it was obvious Terror Mountain had given up and simply "mailing this one in."

The closest match of the first round took place between Kreludor and the Haunted Woods. Despite coming into the contest as serious underdogs, Kreludor showed no fear as they chipped away at one of the tournament's most vaunted defences. Kreludor managed to stay in the game till the very end, when a breakaway goal by Zo Junior sealed the victory for the Haunted Woods.

The Space Station's fate was sealed when none of their offensive players were able to step up when Lost Desert double-teamed Keetra Deile. With their star forward neutralised, scores by Azar and Cayle proved to be more than enough firepower for the Lost Desert to earn the win.

hauntedwoods_zoscore.gif

Meridell took an early lead, as Maraqua's defenders were outclassed by King Skarl's trio of speedy forwards. However, Elon Hughlis single-handedly got Maraqua back in the game, despite being double and triple teamed the entire match. In the end Hughlis's effort fell short, as he was simply unable to keep pace with the Meridell all by himself.

The second biggest surprise of the knockout round came from Roo Island's ability to overcome Tyrannia's talented defence. Time after time, Forward Lilo Blumario would either draw a double team and then pass to an unguarded teammate (who more often than not made the most of their scoring opportunity) or, facing only single coverage, blow past his defender for a shot at the goal.

With the first round drawn to a close, early speculation of who would win the tournament's Most Valuable Player award were centered on forwards Lilo Blumario , "Dasher" Soley , and Volgoth.

Round 2 matches (the Quarterfinals) began on June 15 and ended on June 20, with the following matchups:

Krawk Island faced off against their neighbours, Mystery Island, who after easily beating Faerieland in the knockout round was a favorite to win. Thanks to the goaltending of Garven Hale who played a spectacular game (even by his standards), who stopped many point-blank shots from Mystery Island's duo of Volgoth and Nix to preserve the win.

Meridell and the Darigan Citadel faced off this round as well, with high tensions considering they fought in Champions of Meridell and Battle for Meridell. Darigan Citadel pulled through however, lead the way by Layton Vickles who and broke through the Meridell defence to score a trio of goals (referred to by some as a "hat trick"), putting to rest any talk of their previous tendency to fail in the face of a worthy opponent.

round_two_fp.gif

Brightvale and the Haunted Woods faced off, and being two of the toughest teams to score against many believe it would be a match with little scoring, but very physical. This was half right, as the Haunted Woods stopped the Brightvale offense while the Haunted Woods' passing and well prepared offense were not stopped by Brightvale's underhanded tactics. It was believed before the match begun the victor would stagger into the next round completely exhausted and probably defeated by their next opponent.

The Lost Desert faced off against Roo Island, and tried the same tactic they used against Keetra Deile and cripple their offense. However, even being double and triple-teamed for the entire game Blumario was still able to create enough offensive opportunities for his teammates, along with assistance of Fenny Vail who took up the slack of scoring while the Lost Desert covered Lilo Blumario. Roo Island won the match ro the surprise of nearly everyone, placing them as one of the final four teams.

Talk of post-tournament awards had Lilo Blumario winning the MVP, with Garven Hale coming in second. If voting were held that day, All-Star player choices would include Blumario, Layton Vickles and "Dasher" Soley at forward, Krell Vitor at defender, and Garven Hale at goalkeeper. Honourable mentions would most likely be given to Volgoth and Zo Junior at forward, and "Dirty" Navers at defender.

round3_matchups.gif

Round Three semifinals began on June 23 and ended on June 27, with Krawk Island facing the Haunted Woods and Roo Island against Darigan Citadel.

In the Roo Island vs. Darigan Citadel match, spectators focused on the match-up between Lilo Blumario and Tormo "The Terror" Frein, who was relyed upon to go against Lilo one on one, unlike previous teams to double or triple-teamed him. The strategy worked, and Tormo "The Terror" Frein managed to hold his own against Lilo Blumario and allow only a single goal and an assist. Layton Vickles also played well, carrying the Darigan offense with a flurry of shots Clutch Billaban was unable to stop, reverting to his old soft-goal allowing ways, giving up too many points for the Roo Island offence to keep up.

In Krawk Island vs. the Haunted Woods, the Haunted Woods took the win, managing to score enough goals past Garven Hale despite his effort, and Krawk Island was unable to score enough goals against their defensive. The result would see the Haunted Woods and Darigan Citadel face off in the final rounds.

final_matchup.gif

The final round began on June 30 and ended July 6. To everyone's surprise, the game began with a quick score by Tandrak Shaye when Fanetti threw a sloppy pass to Chelo Binay, which Shaye caught and in one sweeping motion threw it past Fanetti, who was unprepared for the sudden throw. Locking down into their usual defensive stranglehold, the Haunted Woods kept Layton Vickles from throwing single shot at the goal. The defensive stalemate continued on until Krell Vitor forced a fumble and passed to Zo Junior, who began running towards the goal the moment the ball was loose. Striding just beyond the reach of Tormo Frein, Zo made a stutter step which sent Mungo Lifler diving to his left, which allowed Zo easily score the goal and tie the game.

With the game still tied and less than thirty seconds left, Darigan Citadel sent a double team at Wan Dirx, forcing him to make a pass meant for Zo Junior, which was picked off by Kep Bonnefie, who ran through the clear path to the opposing goal. Unbeknownst to Kep, Wan Dirx was quickly gained ground from behind and blocked the ball with a dive when Bonnefie made a shot at the Haunted Woods' goal. With Bonnefie baffled at what just happened, Dirx regained possession of the Yooyuball and dashed in the other direction. By the time the Bonnefie figured out what took place, he was out of position and unable to get back on defence in time.

winner.gif

On the other side of the field, Dirx made the most of the four-on-three advantage, throwing the Yooyuball to a briefly unguarded Chelo Binay, who in turn flicked the ball to Krell Vitor when his defender rushed over to keep him from getting a wide-open shot. In one swift movement, Vitor took Binay's lob and sent a one-timer past the reach of Mungo Lifler, giving the Haunted Woods a 2-1 lead as the final seconds ticked off the clock, earning them the right to take home the Altador Cup. The crowd went silent for a brief moment before erupting in cheer so loud rhe referee's whistle could barely be heard.

Staff Tournament

On June 10, 2006, it was revealed The Neopets Team would be participating in Altador Cup as well, as an internal staff tournament within the offices. Sixteen members of the Neopets staff were assigned a team, and each competed in a mini Altador Cup tournament. Users were asked to vote who would take first, second and third place, and the vote was correct the user won a prize.

Participates were...

Staff tournament rounds coincided with regular tournament rounds, and the same match-ups that existed in the real tournament were played out in TNT's tournament. No staff scores counted towards the real tournament, as that would be cheating. Staff scores were tallied individually, determining who stayed and continued to the round. Voting ended on June 8, 2006. Tournament results were released on August 4, 2006, and users received NP based on the number of correct votes along with an avatar for correctly voting 1 of the Top 3.

Prizes

prizeshop_chairman.gif

Prizes were given out on August 4, 2006, and points rewarded to users could be spent at the Altador Cup Prize Shop. Users who participated received the Altador Cup sidebar as well as an avatar. Trophies were also awarded and placed on all User Lookups, and based on if a user played for Haunted Woods or Darigan Citadel all the time or didn't support either team in the finals, the appropriate trophy was rewarded. Also, if a suer played with either Haunted Woods or Darigan Citadel all the way through the Altador Cup they received either "Spooking the Competition" or "Making the Finals: Darigan Citadel".

Trivia

  • The Altador Cup appears to co-incide with dates and times of the FIFA World Cup in Germany of 2006, and if the golden orb seen in the preview trailer is indeed the "cup" itself, it bears remarkable resemblance to the actual World Cup.
  • Noted advertisements shown within the tournament were a new Dragon Ball Z game being released in July 2006 and a new Garfield movie.
  • During Yooyuball gameplay when the Ixi and Grarrl newscasters are making their remarks, if a user refrains from clicking the "continue" button they will begin to ask the user to hurry up, and eventually a Spyder will come down from the ceiling.
