The Darkest Faerie (also known as The Sleeper, The Betrayer and Mistress of Nightmares) is a powerful Dark Faerie who was one of Altador's 12 great heroes before she betrayed them. She was so powerful she was sealed away at the bottom of the sea for 1,000 years by Fyora after she tried to force the kingdom of Altador under her rule. Since then her name has been forgotten, and is now simply referred to as the darkest and most evil of all Faeries.

The Darkest Faerie is the main antagonist of the game and its title character. At the start of the game, The Darkest Faerie escaped from her imprisonment under the sea when Jerdana's Orb fell from her neck. Soon after that, she washed up on the shores of Meridell, claiming she was going to make everything dark and twisted. After Illusen's charm was stolen by the Werelupe King, nothing could stop The Darkest Faerie from taking over the land, and she quickly covered Meridell in a dark purple cloud, tainting all inhabitants under them (sans Tormund who had a necklace that protected him from her magic) with her evil. She also attacked Faerieland, tainting the inhabits as well and tying up Fyora. (sans Roberta who had a necklace similar to Tormund's) Her ultimate goal was to destroy both Faerieland and Meridell, which she nearly did by using Fyora's Rod. Thanks to Tormund and Roberta she was imprisoned in stone once again.
The Darkest Faerie was the main antagonist of the game. The game opened with Jerdana's Orb falling from the neck of the Darkest Faerie statue, and she escaped her imprisonment. She washed up on the shores of Meridell, and set out to get revenge on Fyora. She started by possessing Illusen and went on to taint the entirety of the kingdom - save for Tormund, who had been given a charm to protect him.

Learning that 1,000 years had past since she had been defeated, and that she was all but forgotten, she decided to announce her return by destroying Meridell entirely - by crashing Faerieland into it. She surprised Fyora and took over the flying city - the only people immune from her magic were Roberta, who had been given an amulet like Tormund, and an Aisha the Darkest Faerie thought looked familiar - in fact, she was Jerdana. Roberta escaped Faerieland and united with Tor, recognising that he had the companion amulet to hers.

The Darkest Faerie employed the Gelert Assassin to pursue them, but he was unable to stop them reaching Fyora's wand, which had been used to imprison the Darkest Faerie the first time around. When the pair brought the wand back to Faerieland, however, The Darkest Faerie disguised herself as Fyora so that they would give her the wand, then used it to trap the real Faerie Queen in a bottle. Tormund and Roberta escaped through a portal to Altador, a city it was believed the Darkest Faerie had destroyed before her imprisonment.

The heroes returned from Altador as the Darkest Faerie started the city falling over Meridell. Using Jerdana's Orb, which they had recovered while in Altador, they turned her back to stone and freed Fyora, who used her wand to make Faerieland fly again and save both cities. The Darkest Faerie's statue was kept in Faerieland, where Fyora could keep a close eye on her.

During the Altador Plot, users were guided by a series of puzzles to restore the city's history, which had been concealed by Jerdana to prevent the Darkest Faerie rewriting it, with herself as sole founder. These puzzles involved finding constellations representing each of the twelve founding heroes, include the Darkest Faerie herself. The clue to her constellation is the first one to be found, and is in the markings on the door of to the Restive Tomb.

In the Altador Plot, users were required to find The Darkest Faerie's contellation, known as The Sleeper. Finding her constellation began to break down a spell that was cast over Altador to cover up it's history.
Ultimately, her statue in the Hall of Heroes is destroyed by the player, as it was where Jerdana had hidden the power source for the history-hiding spell. It was the one place in the city they could be sure The Darkest Faerie would not destroy if she succeeded in taking over the city.

On the 28th of March, a new link was discovered on the Altador map that led to the Restive Tomb. Clicking one of the holes in the center of the door would reveal the pattern of the first constellation. Go back to the Archivist then to the observatory. Find the constellation and report back to the Astronomy Club. The gems above the Darkest Faerie statue now glow and The Sleeper chapter in the Book of Ages is filled in.

Book of Ages: Chapter 1, The Sleeper
<blockquote>Just as a hero must perform a heroic deed before he can be named as such, a villain must also do something terrible in order to earn such a title. The Betrayer was not always an evil being and was once even respected for her deeds. Long before the Great Betrayal, (in fact, before the founding of Altador), she earned her place among the twelve Founders by saving the life of King Altador himself.<br><br>

A terrible menace was plaguing a peaceful farmland, and a hunter (the future king of Altador) journeyed forth to slay the beast. He tracked it back to its lair in a cave at the base of a mountain and there cornered it. Though the beast roared viciously, Altador did not falter.<br><br>
The Book of Ages revealed details about how The Darkest Faerie had came to join Altador in founding the city. The Lupe had set out to save a peaceful farmland from a terrible beast, but after he killed it he was ambushed by another. The Darkest Faerie saved his life, and Altador, who had never seen a Dark Faerie act compassionately, asked her to join his quest to build the greatest city on Neopia. She agreed, and served the kingdom well. Although they had differences of opinion as to how the city should be built - with or without the aid of magic - and how the city's army should be used, Altador came to think of her as a friend - which made her betrayal all the more terrible: "no sword strikes as deep as the one wielded by a friend."

Rather, he notched an arrow and let it fly, striking the beast squarely in the head. Even as the vile creature slumped to the ground, another of its kind snuck up on the unsuspecting Lupe. The noble hunter would have fallen then and there if not for a purple blast of magic. Startled, Altador spun around, just in time to see the other creature collapse. There, standing behind it, was a dark faerie... the Betrayer.<br><br>
The Faeries' Ruin
Altador thanked her graciously for saving his life. He had never witnessed such compassion on the part of a dark faerie before, so he bid her to return with him to his village, where they would feast and be praised as heroes.<br><br>
The Darkest Faerie's statue was mentioned in the epilogue of The Faeries' Ruin. It had gone missing when Faerieland had crash landed into the Haunted Woods, and King Altador set off on a quest to recover it.

Each carried the head of the beast they had slain to the village, and a grand celebration was held long into the night. Altador, realising what a unique ally he had acquired, asked her to stay and join him and his companions in fulfilling a dream he had of founding a great city. The Betrayer agreed, and though she would ultimately help to build the kingdom's august capital and serve the council well, nothing can make up for her terrible betrayal. She broke the king's heart, for no sword strikes as deep as the one wielded by a friend....</blockquote>
