Plots tell tales of world-changing events.
Plots are storylines that add to the history of the Neopets universe. Normally, users can participate to earn prizes, as well as follow the story involving Neopian characters. Players can only participate in most plots for a certain period of time - after they are over, they become part of Neopian history. A mini-plot is a plot with fewer activities and a smaller story
Events and plevents are smaller stories than plots that tend not to involved "world-changing occurrences or big competition", but also can only be played for a certain period of time. The distinction between plots and events hasn't always been clear.
Plots have often coincided with the release of new worlds, and introduce or revisit Neopian characters. They first began to appear on August 15, 2000, with the Arrival of Virtupets.
Plots follow a story, which is usually depicted as comics or short animated films. User participation varies between plots: early plots had users collect certain items and deliver them to a character. Subsequent plots were entirely Battledome orientated, and users participated by fighting enemies in the Battledome, and in some cases choosing which side to fight for. Plot challengers are typically released in the Battledome in waves, containing limited numbers of certain enemies. As a major battle reaches its end, users may face a boss character. The boss enemy is usually a collaborative step, where it is weakened by every player who loses to it until one player can beat it.
The Curse of Maraqua plot experimented with having both a Battledome system and a support system involving collecting items for those people who did not enjoy fighting in the Battledome. Later plots started becoming more puzzle orientated with smaller Battledome sections - most noticeably the Lost Desert Plot.
The story of plots is usually released in parts called chapters. In most recent plots, these chapters are in comic book form. Most plots can only be participated in while these parts are being released, and after the final part is released its puzzles are closed. The stories typically remain viewable after this time, however. The exception to this rule is the Altador Plot, which can still be completed to date.
At the end of the plot, prizes are either given out automatically based on how much a player contributed to the plot (i.e. how many enemies they defeated or how many puzzles they completed) or can be bought for 'plot points' that correspond to the player's contribution. Plots reward the player with a site event trophy for completing them or participating, and a site theme or avatar is not uncommon.
Although the distinction between plots, mini-plots, and events is sometimes ambiguous, there have been at least the following eighteen plots and mini-plots.
* The Altador Plot and parts of the Atlas of the Ancients can still be completed today.
The following is a chronological list of one-off events, including off-site video games. Recurring events, like the Altador Cup and Daily Dare, are listed separately.
