Petpet

Petpets are small creatures that serve as pets for Neopets. Petpets first appeared on the Neopets website on September 27, 2000. On Neopets.com Petpets are class of items. Users can give a single Petpet to each of their Neopets.

A Petpet can also gain levels at the Petpet Battledome and by waking the Turmaculus, but its levels will not be retained if the Petpet is ever removed from its Neopet. In turn, these levels can help the Neopet in the Battledome, acting as an attack multiplier.

There are also Petpetpets, parasites that live on Petpets, which are a pet to the Petpet.

Petaria

Main article: Petaria

As explained in the Wand of Wishing game, Petpets come from an alternate dimension know as Petaria. In this dimension, Petpets are capable of speaking, wearing clothes, and walking upright. There are entire Petpet-based societies in Petaria, with Petpet Park being one of the most well known. As seen during the Operation: Petpet Park event, Petpets can enter Neopia from Petaria via magical portals. Petpets who enter Neopia lose their ability to speak and start acting in a more animal-like manner.

Colour

Main article: Colour

Since October 2, 2001, users have been able to change the colour of their Petpets. Since Petpets are items, changing the colour of a Petpet changes it into a different item. For example, changing the colour of a Babaa to Blue will causes the affected Babaa item to become a Blue Babaa item. In order to change a coloured Petpet back into its original form, users have to change the colour of the Petpet back to the default colour of its species. For example, to change the aforementioned Blue Babaa item back into a Babaa item, the user would have to change to the colour of the Babaa back to White, which is the default colour for the Babaa species.

Users can change the colour of their Petpet by using an appropriate Paint Brush at the Petpet Puddle. The Petpet Lab Ray can also change the colour of a Petpet.

Petpet Types

There are currently 15 different types of Petpet, each of which have a different theme:

Altadorian Petpets Sold at: Legendary Petpets	Altadorian Petpets are based off of creatures found in ancient Greek and Roman mythology.
Aquatic Petpets Sold at: The Rock Pool;	Aquatic Petpets resemble various under-water creatures.
Desert Petpets Sold at: Peopatra's Pet Pets	Desert Petpets tend to be desert or ancient Egyptian themed.
Faerie Petpets Sold at: Faerieland PetPets	In general, Faerie Petpets are colorful and have some sort of wings.
Fanciful Fauna Sold at: Fanciful Fauna	Fanciful Fauna Petpets are based off of Asian creatures, both real and mythological.
Geraptiku Petpets Sold at: Geraptiku Petpets	Geraptiku Petpets are usually rainforest or Amazon themed. Many of them resemble real-life rainforest creatures.
Maraquan Petpets Sold at: Maraquan Petpets	Maraquan Petpets are ocean-themed Petpets, many of which resemble real-life sea creatures.
Medieval Petpets Sold at: Ye Olde Petpets	Medieval Petpets are generally fantasy or medieval-Europe themed.
Moltaran Petpets Sold at: The Petpetorium	Moltaran Petpets have fire/magma or rock associations. Many of the Petpets in the category can only be obtained by combining ingredients at Tangor's Workshop.
Original Petpets Sold at: The Neopian Petpet Shop	This was originally the only category of Petpet. As such, it has no specific theme.
Pirates Petpets Sold at: Krawk Island Nippers	Pirate Petpets are pirate and sailing themed.
Robot Petpets Sold at: The RoboPet Shop	Robot Petpets resemble either robots or outer space aliens. Many of the Petpets in the category can only be obtained by visiting Meteor Crash Site 725-XZ.
Spooky Petpets Sold at: Spooky Pets!	Spooky Petpets are usually Halloween or horror themed.
Tyrannian Petpets Sold at: Tyrannian Petpets	Tyrannian Petpets are prehistoric or dinosaur themed.
Wintery Petpets Sold at: Wintery Petpets	Wintery Petpets are generally Christmas or winter themed. They are sometimes given out by the Advent Calendar.

Nine special petpets were introduced during the grand opening of Petpet Park. As of August 2010, these Petpets exist only as characters in the park and are not yet obtainable as items. Puxa, Mumbat and Bandalu can be brought when transforming your Petpet using a potion.

Old PetPets

Old Aquatic PetPets

There where thirty PetPets that could have been bought at the Aquatic PetPets shop in Old Maraqua. Ever since August 29th, 2001, the day that Old Maraqua was destroyed, they were renamed (excluding Bubbleses, Crabbies, Flippies, Goldies, Gulpers, Pookas, Sharkies, and Smileys) and redesigned. Most of the old PetPets were in fish bowls, giving them more of a pet-like appeaarance. However, you can still see the petpet's old image if it is still equipped to a Neopet. If an old PetPet were to be unequipped from a Neopet, it would convert into the newer version of it. There are thirty old Aquatic PetPets as followed:

Old Spooky PetPets

There where nine PetPets that could have been purchased at the Spooky PetPets shop. As of October 1st, 2002, they were renamed and redesigned. However, you can see that the old PetPet exists if it is still equipped to a Neopet. If an old PetPet were to be unequipped from a Neopet, it would convert into the newer version of it. There were two other PetPets that were existent until they where redesigned. If one of them is still equipped to a Neopet, you can see it's old image and name. Yet again, if it is unequipped from a Neopet, then the unequipped PetPet will convert to it's newer version. They are listed as followed:

Petpet Spotlight

The Petpet Spotlight is a contest held weekly or so that involves a neopet user to draw a picture of their petpet with a description and submit it.

Petpet Protection League

The Petpet Protection League is a group of Neopians who reward Neopets for taking good care of their Petpet. Each week they select a random species of Petpet and reward users whose Neopets have had them for the longest by paying 10 Neopoints for every day they have been owned. Users who have the oldest of the selected species receive a Trophy as well.

Neopets who take their Petpet to the Petpet Laboratory are not counted in the PPL, as it's viewed as a form of cruelty against Petpets.
