An Item is anything in Neopets which can be placed in a users Inventory for use while playing on the website. The term "item" itself is very broad, which can describe nonliving things (food, books, etc.) and living things (Petpets, Bottled Faeries, plants, etc.), all of which can be placed in a users inventory, traded, sold, given away or discarded. Many users make it a hobby to collect certain items, and make a gallery to share with others. As of July 2007, there are 21,788 different items in Neopets (these not inculding unannounced, replaced and 1-Player Challenger items).

Item Category

There are many different types of items in Neopets, all of which have different uses and purposes. Below are all the current categories items fall under as of February 2007...

Special Item Category

The item categories that Neopets uses aren't the most inclusive. For example, all of the concert freebies (posters, plushies, mugs, etc.) are placed into the "Concert Swag" category. You can't find these special groupings on Neopets, however.

Item Status

Item Status is the status in the item holds, witch are unique. Like Special Item Category (from [http://items.jellyneo.net/index.php Jellyneo.Net's Item Database ], like Item Status and Item ID), you can't find these special groupings on Neopets. The Active and Searchable Status are the existing items. For REAL, altogether, there are 23,911 items (these inculding unannounced, replaced and 1-Player Challenger items).

  • Active - Basically, we have all of the information on this item, and it has received the unique item ID. An item ID can be found in a user's shop, SDB, gallery, etc. Active Status has 19,906 items.
  • Not Announced - An item is Not Announced if the item has not been mentioned at all in the New Features and all it is known about it is the item's image URL. Not Announced Status has 170 items.
  • Searchable - A Searchable item is when it can be found via the sidebar search or the Shop Wizard says "Searching for... *item name*". This means that it is in the Neopets item system, but an ID has not been found yet. (It may have also been announced in the news.) Searchable Status has 3,369 items.
  • MIA - An item is MIA if none of the above criteria are met. The item has been announced in the news, but it has not been added to the item system by TNT. They can't be bought, sold, or obtained in Neopia. MIA Status has 171 items.
  • 1-Player BD - These items are all weapons used by 1-player battledome challengers, such as the Pant Devil and the Tax Beast. 1-Player BD Status has 202 items.
  • Replaced - An item in the Replaced category has been totally changed to a completely new item. It can no longer be bought, sold, or obtained in Neopia. (This is mostly an historical reference for those wondering what happened to their items.) Replaced Status has 93 items.

Item Rarity

Rarity has nothing to do with the Rare Item Codes. Rarity is a simple way of showing how rare an item is. An item is rare if they are harder to get than other items. Usually this will also mean they are more expensive. Whenever you see an items rarity it will be listed as a number. These numbers have the following meanings.

  • 1-70 - common, easily found in main Neopian shops and given out by random events.
  • 71-84 - rare
  • 85-90 - very rare
  • 91-95 - ultra rare
  • 96-99 - super rare
  • 100-104 - mega rare
  • 105-119 - Special, these items cannot be obtained through the normal shops. Normally these are only given out as part of a special offer.
  • 120 - This means the item is given out by the Brain Tree when you complete one of his quests.
  • 121-179 - Special, this works the same way as the 101-119 rarity items, but these are more powerful items.
  • 180 - Retired. This item will never again be released and its rarity will never be changed from 180.
  • 200 - Artifact, these items are sold in the Hidden Tower.
  • 250 - Artifact, these are either retired Hidden Tower items or Cooking Pot items made from two Hidden Tower items.

If a user feeds their Neopet a food item with a rarity 90-100 it is considered a Gourmet Food and will qualify their Neopet in the Gourmet Club.

Trivia

  • There is a book titled Rare and Retired Items, which is said to reveal "what those hard to get items are all about". However, owning this book or reading it to a Neopet doesn't give a user any new knowledge about items.
