The Gelert is a greyhound-like creature that was added to Neopets on January 25, 2000 as the Polypup. On July 19th, 2000 the Polypup's name changed to Gelert and its look was updated.

On November 2nd, 2001 TNT added the Pick-The-Gelert Competition which featured 5 new designs for members to pick from. Both Gelerts #5 and #2 officially won (although the joke design, #3, actually had the most votes) so the two designs were combined and the final version was released on 29th November 2001.

In general, Gelerts are described as being very loyal and brave. They value friendship above all else and so are very faithful to those they consider a friend. In the Neopets Trading Card Game, Gelerts are associated with the element of fire.

Battledome

In the Battledome, Gelerts have no natural resistances, however they do have six species abilities:

  • Gelert Bark - Attack: 2 x Air; Defence: none; available from level 1;
  • Gelert Flash - Attack 1 - 2 x Physical; Defence: none; available from level 1;
  • Gelert Cresent Kick - Attack: 2 x Earth, 1 - 2 x Physical; Defence: none; available on Gelert Day only;
  • Gelert Slobber - Attack: 2 x Earth, 2 x Physical; Defence: none; available on Gelert Day only;
  • Gelert Slide - Attack: none; Defence: 2 - 6 x Physical; available on Gelert Day only.

There are also eighteen pieces of equipment that can only be used by a Gelert.

Trivia

  • As of March 2010, over 9.1 million Gelert's have been created, placing them 10th in popularity out of 54 Neopets. They are also featured in 115 different items.
  • The Gelert is said to be based on the dog in the poem 'The Grave of the Greyhound' or 'Beth Gelert'. Many variations of it exist but there is a page on the Neopets site itself dedicated to the story.
  • When painted Spotted, the Gelert's black and white coat pattern imitates that of the Dalmatian.
