Random events are chance happenings around the site that can help or hinder the player. There is a chance a random event will appear whenever the player loads a page: they appear above the page content (but below the navigation bar), and feature an image and a little snippet of text explaining what happened.

A Random Event is an unexpected occurrence while playing Neopets, similar to real life as a random happening that is different from normal routine.
By visiting more site pages, the player increases their chance of receiving random events - PHP games such as NeoQuest or Pyramids are popular for this. The birthday site theme slightly increases the chance of any page load giving an event.

Types
Certain items exclusively or almost exclusively enter the economy through these events - this includes map pieces, Transmogrification Potions, and Codestones. Random events appear in the Neopets TCG in the form of Something Has Happened! cards.
Random Events come in 4 different varieties. They are...

Something Has Happened!
Something Has Happened!
The most common Random Events show a small graphic saying "Something Has Happened!" when they occur. These events can be positive (such as finding neopoints or an item), neutral (such as having a Draik fly overhead on the way to Krawk Island or a passing Neopet saying something), or negative (a pet getting sick or ghosts stealing neopoints from you and putting them on the Money Tree). Unlocking an Avatar or a Sidebar is a "Something Has Happened" event as well, sometimes occurring at random while playing Neopets or making certain actions while playing. Now FUCK ALL!!!
The most common random events are captioned "Something Has Happened!" in a yellow bar above the event. These events can help the player, such as by rewarding them with an item or Neopoints, or by allowing them to send extra scores in a game.

Local Events
{| style="margin: 0 auto;"
Local Events are a subset of "Something Has FUCKIN Happened", which only occur in a specific world. As of January 2007, they include "Winter Random Events" (Terror Mountain), "Tyrannian Random Events" (Tyrannia), and "Island Random Events" (Mystery Island). Like Random Events, they can be positive, negative, or neutral.

Battledome Challengers
Other events are more harmful, such as causing a Neopet to become ill, or losing Neopoints or items. Random events that take absolute amounts of Neopoints can push the player's on-hand cash into negative numbers. Percentage-based thefts take only from on-hand Neopoints and not from the bank or shop till.
Many one-player battledome challengers are unlocked randomly, although certain opponents can only be unlocked in specific ways.

Faerie Quests
While playing Neopets a user may be confronted by a Faerie and be given a Faerie Quest. The user must purchase an item without the use of the Shop Wizard for a reward. The exact type of items as well as the rewards depend on the faerie.

Maximizing
Still others have neither helpful nor harmful effects - such as a passing Neopet saying hello. Some events may be good or bad depending on the player's point of view - such as Boochi zapping their active Neopet and turning it Baby.
Random events are mostly beneficial and sought after, with players always comparing the number and quality of their events with each other. Their very nature makes them impossible to control, but some theories have emerged on how to increase the frequency of events.

Neopet Care
When some characters visit a player in a random event, they issue a challenge - this adds the character to the list of those the player can fight in the Battledome. A few events appear under the "Something Has Happened!" banner but are not necessarily random - players receive these as notifications when they receive an avatar or a site theme.
It's believed keeping Neopets well fed (very bloated, but not beyond that) and happy change the results of certain Random Events. This belief is held due to the fact The Neopets Team said Neopets that are sad and angry will be changed into different colours via Random Event, and having them happy will allow other (presumably better) events to happen.

Sidebars
Local events
Some special Neopets Sidebars (like the Birthday sidebar, obtained and usable only on a users and Neopets birthday) will increase the probability of receiving a random event. However, having a special sidebar does not guarantee a user will get more random events. It has been known for some people to get as many as 30 random events on their birthday while others only 5 or 6.
There a few Something Has Happened-style events that occur in a specific world: while exploring Terror Mountain the player may receive a Winter Random Event, with a blue banner, and while exploring Tyrannia, they may receive a Tyrannian Random Event, with a brown banner.

Karma
Like normal random events, these can help or hinder. Avatar award notifications will still appear as normal, but other Something Has Happened events do not appear in these places at all.
The theory that the more times you perform certain actions, such as donating to the Money Tree or taking care of your pets, your chances of receiving beneficial Random Events increases. Karma is mainly theoretical but does exist to some extent in Neopets. For example, if you refuse a Faerie Quest, the chance of you getting another one is decreased. In fact, for 10 minutes after you refuse, it is non-existent. However, that statement is a unique case, as it is directly stated that a limit will be placed. It is currently unknown whether other activities will increase luck.

According to the Neopian Times editorial, issue 241, donating money and items does not increase the likelihood of getting Random Events. Items cannot alter your Karma; this is a scam to inflate prices. However, many players believe in the Karma system and hope that specifics will be clarified by The Neopets Team.

By donating items to the Money Tree frequently or being generous in general to others, users could increase their chance to receive Random Events. Similar to Karma, this idea spread rapidly with the release of the Wishing Well, with users believing prize selection was given to users of greater Karma than others.
Battledome challengers
Some opponents in the one-player Battledome must be unlocked before the player can fight them. While some of these are always unlocked whenever a player goes to a certain page (e.g. the Tiki Tack Man challenges anyone who visits his shop, or Edna challenges anyone who completes her quest), others are only unlocked randomly: either as part of a Something Has Happened-type event (e.g. the Down for Maintenance Pteri or Boochi) or randomly when visiting a certain location (e.g. Commander Garoo appears randomly at the Space Station).

Digital Karma measured a users deservedness of bonuses in Neopets and AAA were the first few to add this as a feature although they both were very defensive about telling the users that this had happened. Generous users would get more "good" random events and although the exact formula is, of course, secret, it works similar to this:
Faerie Quests
While playing Neopets a user may be confronted by a Faerie and be given a Faerie Quest. The user must purchase an item without the use of the Shop Wizard for a reward. The exact type of items as well as the rewards depend on the faerie.
*old: Number = Random_number(1 to 6); if Number = 6 do_random_event;
*new: Random_number(1 to 6) * Karma; if Number > 6 do_random_event;

It's doubtful the "NeoFormula" is quite as simple, but that is the principle. So the bigger a users secret Karma score is the better. However each test/random makes the Karma score smaller, and time progression causes the Karma to lower as well, making users have be more generous.

However, according to the Neopian Times issue 241 (mark four) editorial, donating money and items does not increase the likelihood of getting Random Events. Even so, many users still hold to the belief a form of Karma exists in Neopets.

Refresh
The more times a user refreshes a page (reloads the page in their internet browser), the more chances they have for a random event. Although a player can literally refresh the same page repeatedly, it is generally considered less boring to move about the site (preferably without using bookmarks, so more pages are viewed). Playing non-flash games such as Cliffhanger, Pyramids, and NeoQuest also increase the chances. However, sometimes TNT reduces the chances of random events on these pages.

The reason this works is that you get a shot at a random event for the "world" you are in each page request (load) and refreshing a page causes a new page request. The best bet in this department is to simply explore, interact, and get lots of usage out of the site.
Trivia
*Some people are of the opinion that doing nice things on the site increases their chances of getting random events. The text of the game play reset random event (see above) no doubt encouraged this view, and The Neopets Team referred to it when releasing it: "Our new software installed on the Neopets servers can now detect whether you have been nice to people, and if you have you may get the following random event!". On the other hand, addressing this issue in an editorial, TNT confirmed that this was not the case and only the birthday site theme increases the chance of events appearing.

Random events are chance happenings around the site that can help or hinder the player. There is a chance a random event will appear whenever the player loads a page: they appear above the page content (but below the navigation bar), and feature an image and a little snippet of text explaining what happened.

By visiting more site pages, the player increases their chance of receiving random events - PHP games such as NeoQuest or Pyramids are popular for this. The birthday site theme slightly increases the chance of any page load giving an event.

Certain items exclusively or almost exclusively enter the economy through these events - this includes map pieces, Transmogrification Potions, and Codestones. Random events appear in the Neopets TCG in the form of Something Has Happened! cards.

Something Has Happened![edit]

The most common random events are captioned "Something Has Happened!" in a yellow bar above the event. These events can help the player, such as by rewarding them with an item or Neopoints, or by allowing them to send extra scores in a game.

Since you have been so nice, your game plays for Meerca Chase II have been reset. You may now play three more times today! Hoorah!

The incessant mewing of a Mutant Kadoatie drives you completely mad, and you give its owner 5,000 Neopoints to take it away!

Still others have neither helpful nor harmful effects - such as a passing Neopet saying hello. Some events may be good or bad depending on the player's point of view - such as Boochi zapping their active Neopet and turning it Baby.

When some characters visit a player in a random event, they issue a challenge - this adds the character to the list of those the player can fight in the Battledome. A few events appear under the "Something Has Happened!" banner but are not necessarily random - players receive these as notifications when they receive an avatar or a site theme.

Local events[edit]

There a few Something Has Happened-style events that occur in a specific world: while exploring Terror Mountain the player may receive a Winter Random Event, with a blue banner, and while exploring Tyrannia, they may receive a Tyrannian Random Event, with a brown banner.

Like normal random events, these can help or hinder. Avatar award notifications will still appear as normal, but other Something Has Happened events do not appear in these places at all.

Battledome challengers[edit]

Some opponents in the one-player Battledome must be unlocked before the player can fight them. While some of these are always unlocked whenever a player goes to a certain page (e.g. the Tiki Tack Man challenges anyone who visits his shop, or Edna challenges anyone who completes her quest), others are only unlocked randomly: either as part of a Something Has Happened-type event (e.g. the Down for Maintenance Pteri or Boochi) or randomly when visiting a certain location (e.g. Commander Garoo appears randomly at the Space Station).

Faerie Quests[edit]

While playing Neopets a user may be confronted by a Faerie and be given a Faerie Quest. The user must purchase an item without the use of the Shop Wizard for a reward. The exact type of items as well as the rewards depend on the faerie.

Trivia[edit]

 • Some people are of the opinion that doing nice things on the site increases their chances of getting random events.
