I think my daughter and I would collect them if we could
find them to buy. Our local TRU doesn't stock 'em, the WotC that used to be in our mall went away last year, etc. Right before Easter I found a small stash of 2-packs at our local Target (in a dark and dusty corner) and bought them all so the Easter Bunny could give them to my kid. Of course, they have not been restocked since then...
Totally understand there. I used to be able to find packs pretty much anywhere until Curse of Maraqua. For some reason since then they've become a lot more sparse, but some places still get them in. Not that it matters to me, because I purchase all of my cards on the internet.
Where is a good place to buy them online?

If you have a local comic shop or two, call them up and ask if they have them in stock. I like supporting mine more anyway, and they keep a good stock of Neopets TCG in stock (not just the latest expansion).
*nod* I actually called our local gaming shop and they don't stock Neopets cards, although they can get them in... What's so great about Yu-Gi-Oh, anyway?
Well I play a multitude of other trading/collectible/customizable card games, but Yu-Gi-Oh is definitely not one of them, nor are they any of the other games Wizards of the Coast makes besides Neopets (used to play a lot of their games, but they have zero respect for their customers), but I'm too much of a Neopets addict not to.
In any event, I usually purchase my cards online from
http://www.dacardworld.com. They have their Base Set and Battle for Meridell boxes marked down cheap, although I think they are sold out at the moment.
And I wholeheartedly encourage you to order from your local comic shop. Even if you have to pay ten dollars more, it's totally worth it because they're the ones who, as you said, would host the tournaments and such. Plus, if you have them order some cards and only buy a couple packs, they'd probably at least have the rest out on display and something might start. That happened with another game here, and now we draw tournaments of eight to ten people =).
