Overview of article needed, discussion of main wiki image to use, and completion of a Petpet Paint Brush list |
A paint brush is a special type of item that can be used to change the colour of a Neopet or Petpet. Within the Neopets community, the act of using a paint brush is called "painting". There are many different paint brushes in Neopia, and the colour that a Neopet or Petpet becomes after painting depends on which paint brush is used. For example, a Blue Paint Brush will change the colour of a Neopet to Blue, while a Scritchy Sketchy Paint Brush will change the colour of a Neopet to Sketch. Paint brushes disappear after they are used and, as such, each paint brush can only be used once.
Paint brushes are broadly divided into two groups: those that can be used to paint Neopets and those that can be used to paint Petpets. These groups are mutually exclusive; paint brushes intended for Neopets cannot be used on Petpets, and paint brushes intended for Petpets cannot be used on Neopets. Users can determine which group a paint brush belongs to by examining the name of the paint brush. If the paint brush's name contains the word "Petpet", then it can only be used on Petpets. If the paint brush's name does not contain the word "Petpet", then it can only be used on Neopets.
Using a paint brush
To use a paint brush on a Neopet, the user must place the paint brush in their inventory and then travel to the Rainbow Pool. At the Rainbow Pool, the user will be shown a picture of each of their Neopets. If the paint brush in their inventory can be used on one of their Neopets, then a drop down list containing the name of the paint brush will appear below that Neopet. The user must select the paint brush from this drop down box and then click the submit button to use the paint brush.
To use a paint brush on a Petpet, the user must first attach the Petpet to one of their Neopets. Next, the user must place the paint brush in their inventory and then travel to the Petpet Puddle. At the Petpet Puddle, the user will be shown a picture of each Petpet that is attached to one of their Neopets. If the paint brush in the user's inventory can be used on one of displayed Petpets, then a drop down list containing the name of the paint brush will appear below that Petpet. The user must select the paint brush from this drop down box and then click the Paint this Petpet! button to use the paint brush. Petpets that have been zapped by the Petpet Lab Ray cannot be painted.

Unusable Neopet paint brushes
Very rarely, a paint brush colour is retired. The paint brushes become unusable (and in the case of the Unicorn brush, disappear completely) and pets painted the retired colour no longer remain it, but may be changed to a newer version. An example of this occurred on the 8th of January, 2002, when the Glass Paint Brush was retired, and replaced with the Tyrannian Paint Brush. Some of the glass pets were turned into the newer Tyrannian versions (the Shoyru was one of the first Tyrannian Pets), while the others remained as glass pets until a Tyrannian version was made for each of them. The list of retired brushes is:
- Glass - Glass coloured pets were automatically repainted the Tyrannian colour.)
- Jelly - The Jelly Paint Brush is a special case as the item was never released and, most likely, never will be , despite the fact that the image can be found in the image database.
- Shadowed - Now the Shadow colour.
- Lutari - A colour similar to Mystery Island. No pets were ever released in this colour, so the item is not usable. It does not "paint" a pet into a Lutari.
- Stars - Now the Starry colour.
- Stone - Stone coloured pets were automatically repainted the Mystery Island colour.
- Unicorn - Replaced by the Unicorn Gem, later renamed to the Uni Gem, Neopets who were painted Unicorn were changed to a red version of that pet.
- Ice - The Ice Paint Brush can be found in the image database, but was never relleased as a Paint Brush
- Black and White - This was the old name for the Skunk Paint brush.
Note that, if the actual paint brush (as an item) is retired, it does not always mean it cannot be used. Paint brushes such as the Lost Desert Paint Brush, the Faerie Paint Brush, the Golden Paint Brush, and others are retired, but may still be used and The Neopets Team continue to make these colours available for new species.
Petpet paint brushes
A Petpet Paint Brush is designed for painting Petpets a specific colour. They work much in the same way as a Paint Brush for Neopets - they are used at the Petpet Puddle, akin to the Rainbow Pool, to paint a Petpet attached to a user's Neopet.
Interestingly, many colours that Neopets cannot obtain with a Paint Brush, only with alternative means such as via the Secret Laboratory, are available as a Paint Brush for Petpets, such as Robot or Mutant colours. However, there are also some Petpet colours that can only be obtained through the Petpet Laboratory, such as Chocolate.
As of March 2009, there are 38 different Petpet Paint Brushes...
Trivia
- On May 15th, 2002, the Baby colour won the first Paint Brush competition.
- The second Paint Brush competition between the Tartan, Mystery Island and Pirate colours went live on May 16th, 2002. Pirate won the majority with 194,375 total votes. The tartan colour would've been for the Aisha and Moehog. Also later on the Island Colour was released later on on Neopets after the victory for the election of the Pirate Colour.
- There are three colours only available by using a Paint Brush: Royal, Usuki, and Quiguki. These colours are not available through the Rainbow Fountain or the Lab Ray.
- It is rumoured that the Lutari Island paintbrush will be called the Tropical Paintbrush.
- The paint brush, Strawberry Fields Forever Paint Brush, is based on the Beatles song 'Strawberry Fields Forever'.
