An Item is anything in Neopets which can be placed in a users Inventory for use while playing on the website. The term "item" itself is very broad, which can describe nonliving things (food, books, etc.) and living things (Petpets, Bottled Faeries, plants, etc.), all of which can be placed in a users inventory, traded, sold, given away or discarded. Many users make it a hobby to collect certain items, and make a gallery to share with others. As of July 2007, there are 21,819 different items in Neopets (not including unannounced, replaced or 1-Player Challenger items).

Item categories

There are many different types of items in Neopets, all of which have different uses and purposes. Below are all the current categories items fall under as of February 2007...

Item rarity

Rarity has nothing to do with the Rare Item Codes. Rarity is a simple way of showing how rare an item is. An item is rare if they are harder to get than other items. Usually this will also mean they are more expensive. Whenever you see an items rarity it will be listed as a number. These numbers have the following meanings. All items with rarity over 70 show an inventory tag when seen in a user's inventory, helping users identify rare items faster.

  • 1-70 - Common, easily found in main Neopian shops and given out by random events.
  • 71-84 - Rare
  • 85-90 - Very Rare
  • 91-95 - Ultra Rare
  • 96-99 - Super Rare
  • 100-104 - Mega Rare
  • 105-119 - Special, these items cannot be obtained through the normal shops. Normally these are only given out as part of a special offer.
  • 120 - This means the item is given out by the Brain Tree when you complete one of his quests.
  • 121-179 - Special, this works the same way as the 101-119 rarity items, but these are more powerful items.
  • 180 - Retired. This item will never again be released and its rarity will never be changed from 180.
  • 200 - Artifact, these items are sold in the Hidden Tower.
  • 250 - Artifact, these are either retired Hidden Tower items or Cooking Pot items made from two Hidden Tower items.
  • 500 - These items are so rare that they can only be purchased through the NC Mall with real-life currency.

If a user feeds their Neopet a food item with a rarity 90-100 it is considered a Gourmet Food and will qualify their Neopet in the Gourmet Club.

Inventory tags

When seen in the users inventory, some items will be labelled with certain tags after their name, which signify difference between them and other items. They are...

Item status

New items are always being added to Neopets, and the status or creation process of an item is something of interest to many users, who look forward to the newest items or are discovering images or information about them before their release. While there are 21,819 active and noted items which users can acquire as of July 2007, there are many items items whose status in the item database is on hold due to special reasons.

  1. An item's name can be found via the sidebar search or the Shop Wizard, which means it is in the item database but does not have an ID yet. Items like this may sometimes be announced in the news before they are officially released. There are 3,258 of these items.
  2. The item has not been mentioned in the New Features and all that is known is the item's image URL. There are 203 of these items.
  3. An item's image and name is found, but for some reason is never officially released, even when mentioned in the New Features (sometimes considered MIA). There are 188 of these items.
  4. Items (usually Battledome Equipment) which is only used by 1-Player Challengers, and can never be acquired by users. There are 202 of these items.
  5. An item has been redrawn, renamed, or both, either taking them out of the database or replacing them with a new one. Items such as this are noted for their historical significance, due to the changing style of art or direction in Neopets. There are 93 of these items.

Trivia

  • There is a book titled Rare and Retired Items, which is said to reveal "what those hard to get items are all about". However, owning this book or reading it to a Neopet doesn't give a user any new knowledge about items.
