'''Petpets''' (sometimes ''PetPets'') are pets for a user's [[Neopet]]. A class of [[items]] created on September 27, 2000, they can be attached to a Neopet much like [[Battledome Equipment]]. Most Petpets can be purchased in official Neopian [[shops]], but some are gained only by other activities, such as using the [[Cooking Pot]].
 
For a long time, Petpets could not be painted, but this was changed on October 2, 2001 with the introduction of the [[Petpet Paint Brush]], which is used at the [[Petpet Puddle]]. Later, on August 3, 2005, the [[Petpet Lab Ray]] was introduced. Like the Neopet [[Lab Ray]], the Petpet equivalent can alter a Petpet's [[colour]] and other statistics, such as species, level and name. The Petpet even has a chance of being completely destroyed.
 
A Petpet can also gain levels at the [[Petpet Battledome]] and by waking the [[Turmaculus]], but its levels will not be retained if the Petpet is ever removed from its Neopet. Robot Petpets resemble either robots or outer space aliens.  The [[Mibblie]], [[Nedler]], [[Rashpid]], and [[Tencals]] can only be obtained from the [[meteor]].  The [[Combobot]], [[Romeep 3t3]], [[Ultra Pinceron]], and [[Ultra Mega Bot 2000]] can only be obtained by mixing items at the [[cooking pot]].  The Orbulon can only be obtained as a prize from various [[scratch card]] games.  All other Robot Petpets can be purchased at [[The RoboPet Shop]] in the [[Virtupets Space Station]].

===Aquatic Petpet===
In [[Neopets (website)|Neopets]], Petpetpets are usually expensive, and are often viewed as a status symbol. Their high price is due to the the fact they will only appear from a rare [[Random Event]], in which a random Petpet attached to one of the users [[Neopet]]s catches one and brings it back to their owner in their mouth. Because of how easy it is to lose the Petpetpet from the user's inventory (see explanation in "How to attach" below), keeping a Petpetpet from the Random Event is difficult, and once a Petpetpet is attached to a Petpet, it's attached for good. The only way it can be taken off after that is if the user removes the Petpet from their Neopet, in which case the Petpetpet attached will simply vanish.
Aquatic Petpets are Petpets which resemble under-water creatures.  Except for the [[Bubbles]], [[Crabby]], [[Flippy]], [[Goldy]], [[Gulper]], [[Pooka]], [[Sharky]], and [[Smiley]], which are all retired, and the [[Peedleedoo]], which can only be obtained by redeeming a virtual item code, all Aquatic Petpets can be bought at [[The Rock Pool]] in [[Mystery Island]].

===Faerie Petpet===
Assuming the disappearance was not the fault of the [[Pant Devil]] or a similar Random Event-thief, the Petpetpet should now be attached to the Petpet of the users active Neopet. If a user wants to remove the Petpetpet, all they need to do is unequip the Petpet, which is achieved by clicking on the Petpet on the users [http://www.neopets.com/quickref.phtml Quick Ref] page and selecting "Stop Playing with ''(Petpet's name)''." The Petpetpet will then be gone, with no way of retrieving it.
Faerie Petpets are sold at the [[Faerieland PetPets]] shop in [[Faerieland]]. In general, Faerie Petpets are cuter than other Petpets. Additionally, many Faerie Petpets have some type of wings.

==Plot appearances==
Due to being small, Petpetpets don't play very big roles in [[plot]]s, but they have been known to make appearances all the same. In [[The Tale of Woe]], a few Petpetpets could be found in dug up graves (only as art, not as prize/real item) during the gravedigging of plot completion. In [[Petpet Adventures: The Wand of Wishing]], Petpetpets were used to give bonuses to stats. In [[Journey to the Lost Isle]], Petpetpets played a much bigger role, being the giant, [[mutant]] monsters the explorers faced during their stay on the island. Some were hostile, having to be fought in order for the explorers to escape, and others where either herbivores or only attacked when felt threatened.

===Tyrannian Petpet===
Two images of unreleased Petpetpets can be found in Neopets' image database. It can be concluded from their image URL they have been created either at the same time as the [[Mootix]], [[Breebly]], [[Cooty]] and [[Vernax]], or shortly thereafter. Exactly what they are is unknown. They could be rejected designs from the early Petpetpet creation stages or "joke items" (much like the items from July 22, 2006) which [[The Neopets Team]] eventually decided not to release. Oddly though, the Petpetpet resembling a plucked bird was the first Petpetpet to ever appear in [http://www.neopets.com/games/caption/caption_archive.phtml?place=303 a picture] of the [[Caption Competition]].
Tyrannian Petpets are prehistoric or dinosaur themed. They are sold at the [[Tyrannian Petpets (Shop)|Tyrannian Petpets]] shop in [[Tyrannia]].  The [[Trumpadon]] and the [[Uggazew]] are the only two Tyrannian Petpets that cannot be purchased at the Tyrannian Petpets shop.  The [[Trumpadon]] is currently retired, and the [[Uggazew]] can only be obtained by mixing a [[Mazzew]] and a [[Uggatrip]] at the [[cooking pot]].

Just a few of the Petpetpets available

A Petpetpet is a very tiny insect-like creature which act as a parasite or pet (depending on the Petpetpet) to Petpets. The first Petpetpets were released on June 11, 2003.

Overview

Petpetpets take many different shapes, the majority of which bear strong resemblance to real insects. All of them use the body of their Petpet master as a home, and some even use it as a food source.

In Neopets, Petpetpets are usually expensive, and are often viewed as a status symbol. Their high price is due to the the fact they will only appear from a rare Random Event, in which a random Petpet attached to one of the users Neopets catches one and brings it back to their owner in their mouth. Because of how easy it is to lose the Petpetpet from the user's inventory (see explanation in "How to attach" below), keeping a Petpetpet from the Random Event is difficult, and once a Petpetpet is attached to a Petpet, it's attached for good. The only way it can be taken off after that is if the user removes the Petpet from their Neopet, in which case the Petpetpet attached will simply vanish.

Petpetpets marked with an * are announced, searchable and featured in either a game or various items, but no one appears to have them, making it unclear whether they are obtainable or not.

How to attach

Once obtained, a Petpetpet can attach itself to a Petpet by the following means:

  • The Petpet which will become the host of the Petpetpet which is attached to the users active Neopet.
  • The Petpetpet is in their inventory.
  • Refresh the inventory until the Petpetpet disappears.

Assuming the disappearance was not the fault of the Pant Devil or a similar Random Event-thief, the Petpetpet should now be attached to the Petpet of the users active Neopet. If a user wants to remove the Petpetpet, all they need to do is unequip the Petpet, which is achieved by clicking on the Petpet on the users Quick Ref page and selecting "Stop Playing with (Petpet's name)." The Petpetpet will then be gone, with no way of retrieving it.

Plot appearances

Due to being small, Petpetpets don't play very big roles in plots, but they have been known to make appearances all the same. In The Tale of Woe, a few Petpetpets could be found in dug up graves (only as art, not as prize/real item) during the gravedigging of plot completion. In Petpet Adventures: The Wand of Wishing, Petpetpets were used to give bonuses to stats. In Journey to the Lost Isle, Petpetpets played a much bigger role, being the giant, mutant monsters the explorers faced during their stay on the island. Some were hostile, having to be fought in order for the explorers to escape, and others where either herbivores or only attacked when felt threatened.

Two images of unreleased Petpetpets can be found in Neopets' image database. It can be concluded from their image URL they have been created either at the same time as the Mootix, Breebly, Cooty and Vernax, or shortly thereafter. Exactly what they are is unknown. They could be rejected designs from the early Petpetpet creation stages or "joke items" (much like the items from July 22, 2006) which The Neopets Team eventually decided not to release. Oddly though, the Petpetpet resembling a plucked bird was the first Petpetpet to ever appear in a picture of the Caption Competition.
