Neopets gives no hints as to where is comes from or how it came to be, leaving much to the imagination of its origin.

Although Shit is associated with the item ''Pile of Shit'', an item gained from and now made cheap from the [[game]] [[Pick Your Own]], it's origins begin back in [[Tyrannia]], years before the finding of [[Meridell]] where the game is played.
There is a ''Pile of Dung'' item available from the [[Pick Your Own]] [[game]], but dung was used earlier than this to make furniture in [[Tyrannia]]. Dung is also used in some [[food]] and [[weapon]]s. A Pile of Dung

Dung is a material in Neopia used to make certain items. It is also a colour certain Petpets can be painted.

There is a Pile of Dung item available from the Pick Your Own game, but dung was used earlier than this to make furniture in Tyrannia. Dung is also used in some food and weapons. It is featured in an avatar, attained from having ten dung items in a user's inventory, and in a NeoBoard emoticon.

As of June 2011, there are 96 dung items.

Petpets can be painted to look like dung using the Dung Petpet Paint Brush. As of May 2012, a total of 24 Petpets can be painted dung:

  • The Incense Burner, a Furniture item, is said to be for Neopets who love dung furniture, but who don't love the smell. It is available from a Haunted Woods TCG Rare Item Code.
  • There is a book titled Not-So-Disgusting Dung Uses with the description "Only 1,500 NP when purchased together with Disgusting Dung Uses" - although Disgusting Dung Uses does not exist.
  • From 5 October 2007, Neopets can be customised with the Pile of Dung item.
