A Disease is any type of sickness which can come over a users Neopet. Pets do not simply recover from a disease with time, instead, each disease has its own unique cure, a certain item that must be used on your pet in order to cure it. While sick a Neopet will continue to lose hit points, be unable to fight in the battledome, and become more misreble until it's cured. They can be diagnosed at the NeoHospital, and the cures can be bought at Neopian Pharmacy or other such stores. A disease can also be cured at the Healing Springs in Faerieland, but may require several visits as all effects of the Healing Springs are random.

A Disease is a sickness that can be contracted by a Neopet.  When sick, Neopets continuously to lose hit points and happiness, and they are unable to fight in the Battledome.  Diseases are often caused by Random Events or by ingesting certain harmful food items.   A few weapons have the ability to inflict diseases in the Battledome, and specific chance-based games, such as the Wheel of Excitement and the Qasalan Expellibox, can also make a Neopet sick.
Diseases can occur as Random Events, or may be triggered by an item such as Rotten Omelette. Chance-based areas of the website can also affect a users Neopet, such as the Wheel of Excitement which features a different Disease your Neopet can be afflicted with every few months. Also, some weapons of the battledome have been known to cause sickness, as have 1-Player Challengers.

There are currently 36 known diseases.  Each disease has a specific set of associated curative items, and in order to cure a disease, the user must use an appropriate item on the affected Neopet.    Curative items can be purchased at the Neopian Pharmacy in Neopia Central, Remarkable Restoratives in Shenkuu, and Lost Desert Medicine in the Lost Desert.  Cures bought at the Neopian Pharmacy are always guaranteed to work, while cures bought at Remarkable Restoratives and Lost Desert Medicine have a chance of being ineffective.  The Healing Springs can also sometimes heal sick Neopets.
As of July 25, 2006, there is a current total of 35 diseases, but new ones are always being added to the game.

Causes of disease
Disease Causing Items
Disease causing items are either food or battledome weapons.  Some people enjoy making opponents pets sick with weapons in the battledome.  Infecting a pet with food is usually a newbie mistake, but is sometimes practiced as a way of giving a pet a different disease with a cheaper cure.

Foods
Ferocious Negg

May give your pet a random disease.  It is available from the Negg Faerie.  Probably one of the most commonly used disease causing items, because it can also increase a pet's strength.  Only price effective for pets that can no longer use the training school.  The Strength Serum is also recommended for this purpose.

Poisonous Jelly

May give your pet Neomonia.  Just buy another jelly if you get it from the Giant Jelly, they are plenty and cheap.

Poisonous Lollypop

Random Events
May give your pet floppy tongueGiven out by Jhudora sometimes for completing a level one quest.
The following two random events can cause diseasesThe first one gives one of your Neopets Pollenitus, while the second gives one of your Neopets a randomly selected disease:

Items
Rotten Omelette
There are many items that can cause diseases.  Many of these items contain the word "poison" or "poisonous" in their name.

Foods
May cause Ugga-Ugga.  If you get this at the Giant Omelette, don't feed it to your petBuy another omelette off the Shop Wizard if it is hungry.
The below listed foods can cause diseases when fed to a NeopetSome of these foods will always result in a sick Neopet, while others only have a small chance at causing a disease:

Weapons
A pet gets a disease from a weapon not by equipping it, but by having an opponent attack them with that weapon in the battledome.  Most disease causing weapons include poison in their name, but a few do not.

Buzz Poison Blaster

Other Items
Poison Snowflake

The following potions can sometimes cause a disease when used on a Neopet:
May cause hoochie coochies.  Sells for about 200 NP, over a hundred times more expensive than the Poison Snowball for less icons.  Don't expect it ever to be used in the battledome.

Portable Cloud

{| style="margin:0 auto; width: 250px; text-align:center;" class="wikitable"
May cause watery eyes. A very solid battledome weapon that is given by Jhudora at level 47, and is therefore virtually nonexistant.

Games
May cause watery eyes.  A multiple use six icon weapon that would be great for beginners, if it didn't cost over a million NP.  If bought, it will be for a gallery, not battle.
There are certain games (such as the Wheel of Excitement and the Wheel of Misfortune) which give a users Neopet's a disease, usually as a risk of playing the game for the rewards. The afflicted disease is usually changed every month or so.

Epidemics
Species Specific
Itchy Scratchies epidemic
Some Neopets species can become sick by eating certain foods that otherwise do not make a pet sick at all.
On 6th March 2001, there was an outbreak of Itchy Scratchies at the Money Tree. Any pets which visited it had a high chance of being infected. The epidemic was brought under control later the same day, and the Water Faerie from the Healing Springs offered to cure those she could.

Scourgies pandemic
*Kyriis can get Itchy Scratchies from apples.
On April Fool's Day 2011, the Scourgies pandemic was released. The highly contagious disease was discovered at 1:03:56 am NST, the Pharmacy releasing information about how many Neopets started to have fungus growing all over them, as well as itchiness, dizziness, and muscle aches. Cures could be distributed to Neopets the player did not own from the hospital.
*Quiggles get neezles from eating ice cream, and other "cream" foods, because they are cold blooded and their blood changes temperature according to their surroundings.
*Tonu can get sick from a Melted Chocolate Negg.
*Skeith can get sick from cheese items.

Trivia
Trivia
*On August 24, 2002, the Wheel of Excitement began to give Sneezles to Neopets. This was a done a day after Meuka became a challenger in Defenders of Neopia, allowing users to gain access to fight him.
*...to be added...
*The price of the cure of the chosen disease in the Wheel of Excitement always increase tenfold or higher during the time the disease is given due to high demand.
