It signifies a lack of linguistic intelligence. Of course, it also depends on the person you are talking too. If you are talking to someone like Igg or Twinkle for example, you can spell badly but not leave an impression that you lack intelligence, apparently.

Of course bad spelling does not necessarily equate to low IQ, but the easiest way to strike a good first impression of intelligence and maturity is to use proper spelling and grammar.

surely the argument wasnt that people are miss spelling things, but they're writing things in "chat speak" which is something different altogether. i dont believe for one minute that the people that write "u" and "wot" etc can't spell "you" and "what". they just choose not to.

insult people. lots of them.
not that i know or anything..
(actually my english coursework got an A for.. "imaginative" writing. it involved lots of daemons and zombies and big siege tanks and stuff, completely nuts it was)

as for the Dyslexia argument.
i have my opinions (as always) but i wouldnt touch that one with a barge poll.

(sence sence sence)

edit: for the record: im dyslexic, as is my brother (hes far worse than i however) and i did fine.
except for the ocassional word that i purposly misspell for kicks.

I don't believe that every word you misspell is 'for kicks'.
But I shan't go through your post and pick out your misspelling. Because you did it for kicks, right? ;)

Being unable to spell does not always indicate a lack of intelligence. End.

no.
some where because i quite frankly, dont see the point in proof-reading a post for an online forum.
school-work or offical documents, yes.
a forum?
ha, ive got better things to do.

edit:
oh. and while im sure ive left the impression that im an idiot, i'll note one thing.
ive taken two official IQ tests in my time.
i got scores of 76 and 189.
i note again, IQ is perception not right out smarts.

Good point. The fact remains that chatspeaking people misspell on purpose just because it "seems cooler". A fine line has to be drawn between short forms and blatant distortion of the English language.

Sath my boy, I didn't mean to imply that you were an idiot- I don't think I did.
IQ tests measure aptitude at IQ tests, really.

My friend Kirsten, while not dyslexic has quite a lot of trouble with spelling. I think she welcomes chatspeak online because she doesn't have to worry about misspelling things- she tries at school and actually, texts in full english.

Meh. I dont fink its dat importent innit.

It's just irritating when corporations do it to be down with the kids.

My friend uses "lyke" on AIM. It's not even shorter than "like"! What's the POINT?

There is no point, simply. They do it because they can, and because everyone else is.

The first time I saw "lyke" I thought they were saying ly-kie. I thought to myself, what's ly-kie? Is that a type of dog?

LOL

Anyway I think the only reason people talk chatspeak is because they think it's "kewl"

i sometimes write kewl, because i say ke-wel in real life, and its a bit like that. not because i'm saying cool in a different way, but because i am saying a different word.
