So I'm thinking of getting a job for the summer. It's rather late, I know, but I'm still trying to figure out how to get it past my mom (who doesn't want me to work for ridiculous reasons).
I'd like to do something that will get me experience for later jobs (so nothing like fast food) or something I could put on my college app and be proud of. I was hoping for an internship, but those are hard to come by (especially one that pays).
Any ideas? The best one I have is the bank....

Has anyone else looked for a similar job? How goes the search?

Well... i'm sure you know about my internship already. My school requires us to have an internship, so i found one that the school offers directly.

I'm going to Boeing over the summer. Alhtouhg it is a 1 hour commute in long-beach... its sounds like an interesting internship so... yeah.

When I was looking for a job, I just put my resume in at most of the local shops. Of course, I managed getting a job somewhere completely different (my school's restaurant), but it's worth a try.

Well... I don't know how old you are, but most camps hire people who are 16 and over, and it's fun work for one thing (for the most part, I admit, that sometimes it can be rough) you're so underpaid that it's like you're not even being paid (ie. You work under minimum wage), and yet you still get money in the end for having fun.

Me on the other hand, I do work at a camp but I have fun, work with horses and get paid far over minimum wage. So I cheat. Often day camps, or overnight camps hire out to younger staff.

Or you could always volunteer. Camps always love volunteers. *nods*
Or... you could just... not work and chilax over the summer. Something I wish I could do.

I have some third-person experiences. Third-hand? Anyway, I've watched people try and find jobs and internships.

If you really want one at this late stage, forget the money aspect unless for some reason colleges in the USA ask how much you were paid. You're more likely to find a job if you don't expect a high pay - and are willing to not be paid. It's the work experience that really counts. I doubt you will find an internship, so a part-time job would be good. If you can't find one soon, volunteer. Volunteering looks good on the app. I was willing to work two weeks without pay (time and travel money) at my primary school's summer school. They insisted on paying me, so I suggested HKD$10. I got paid $200, which frightened me. Some university graduates don't even get that much for sweeping the floor every other day.

This is really bad when I receive job talks before I'm as old as you, Kim. o_o

Are they licensed to do that? They could get in serious legal trouble if they aren't.

I'm going to try to get a job at a restaurant over the summer, and if I like it I'll keep it. I'll probably start out cleaning the tables (I believe the term is a 'bus girl' but I'm not sure) and then I'll do waitress sort of things. I have two places in mind, the one because I can walk to it and the other because tons of people eat there and leave large tips. Fitting it in during band camp will be a bit hard though. I have been asking a few of my friends IRL for advice, and some of it has helped.

Nothing would humor me more than to see a man in a SpongeBob suit get arrested for infringing on copyright laws.

If I were to don a costume and walk around in front of a store, it'd better be for cotton candy. Patrick isn't cool enough for me. Haha.

Oh, and Lillie, I don't get job talks because I'm not supposed to be working. But I'm getting tired of asking my parents for pocket change, and I feel guilty when my mom hands over a $20 that she worked hard for. So yes. That is why I need some cash. I'd even consider like.. Trader Joe's, but I'm thinking the bank is my best bet... job experience and mediocre pay. I'd love to be a teller. Then I'd know which guys are rich... =P

Well, since you're 17 you could get a job at a store of some sort. (example- grocery store)

I started work at one this summer and while it's frustrating at times and not that spectacular, it looks better than something like McDonald's on an application.

If you want helpful work experience for some future job...good luck. Too late for internships. I'd say take ahoteinrun's advice and volunteer somewhere. If you want pay, though, you'll have to try local shops.


Depends. The camp I work out will hire people who're 14, but they do the kinds of things they can't get hurt from...sweeping, mopping, etc. They worked in the cafeteria with us. Other than the café, though, I think everyone is over 18. And everyone who works at this camp gets paid at least minimum wage. Really depends on the camp.

Well minimum pay mite be all you get if your only sixteen or younger so it mite be pointless to look for someone offering more, but I guess some jobs mite have exceptions

I want a job, but my parents and me think in opposite directions. I whine I beg, they sternly knock me with a boxing glove...even though when we get mad at eachother they say they'll give a job so I won't be moping around the house all summer complaining I wanna do something. But the only job you can really be given at 15 around here is being a bag boy at the Acme, people usually bag there own food anyway so they'll probably won't even need me half the time. And I vowed that I'd rather not work at all then work at any fast food establishment. Or food establishment period, I don't know if I really wanna know what goes on in back there.

Benefits to a bank - once you get trained and have done a few months as a teller, its REALLY REALLY hard to get fired. The training is long and they can't afford to train people all the time. (I mean, if you steal, yeah, you're fired, but for other things its harder)

But when they ask if you want to ONLY work for summer, tell them that it 'depends on your experience during the summer and if it goes well you would like to stay' and say it convincingly. It MIGHT be a lie, but it will help get you the job.
