Ledi, I recognize that huge spike in the second half of '02 because it's when I joined. Yahoo mail users got a link in the 'weekly picks' newsletter that Yahoo used to send out. It's fascinating that that recommendation had such an enormous effect on traffic. Or was there some other outreach program going on then?

You can see that traffic dropped off by a bunch when neo incorporated the ad banners, but I have no clue why traffic dropped off by 20% beginning last January, even discounting the advent calendar spike in December. Anyone have a theory?

I don't think that's just due to that newsletter - it's more likely that's when there was enough popularity to spark a fad. For all the December spikes, that's probably winter vacation and its end. Same for the summer humps.

The down spikes (best visible without smoothing) are probably due to downtime. You're not going to get many page views if all of them are the red Pteri.

Here's a fairly wide graph of all the data with lots of smoothing applied:, which brings out the humps very well: click

If I had a better idea of how these, I could tell if this was normal weekly fluctuation, but from the looks of it there hasn't been any decline in pageviews since the redesign. People need time to look at it before they decide to stay or leave, so the real test will be the coming months's pageviews.

One can arrange the data into a 7xn matrix and run principal components analysis on it to find the most significant few weekly trends.....or should be able to, anyway. (I hope I'm remembering this right, since it'll be on one of my finals two weeks from now!) One should be able to do it on 365xn for yearly trends, but then there's probably not enough years to do it with...

I'd do it - I'm very curious too - but I don't have access to the data. :(

I'd be interested in seeing that too, but I have no idea what any of that means. (Ever since I got out of my last math class, I've been systematically destroying the parts of my brain that understand anything mathematical.)

I think this thread alone proves that every last player will not get used to the site layout changes. Many will choose to leave instead.
While I understand cleaning up the look of the site, I'm not going to use a site where a fourth of the page is off my screen at all times. Side-scrolling is a major inconvenience and it gives me a headache; why get used to that, when I use Neopets to relax?
It's also sort of annoying to know we're not getting any "more" on a page, so they didn't really have a reason to make the pages wider. The vast majority of "daily" pages and pages I use even more frequently than that--like my inventory, my shop, and Neoquest--are unchanged.

Yeah I really do wonder how they picked which pets would remain able to NOT be Converted, and also which ones would go from being four-legged to two-legged or vice-versa, and also which ones would not be redrawn with fists. Seems like they could have kept the consistency a little more.

Oops I realized way too late that I posted this in the wrong thread. Dur.

Well, now that I've had some time for the shock to wear off, I think I actually like the new layout, kinda. Or I'll get used to it anyway. There are things I like about it.
I like seeing my active pet on almost every page, I like having things like my favorite games, bank, edit profile, shop wiz, etc. in quick easy drop down menus. I like that there are now different colors to choose for the themes (I guess we can't really call them sidebars anymore) so I can have something besides ugly yellow for my side account. And I like how they've improved the lookup code to make it easier to modify and be more customizable.

But it's the pet redraws I can't get over, and I'm not going to get over. Some of them look awesome, but some of them look hideous, especially of course the ones that used to be redraws, and not all of them have the option of staying as the old art! And even with the ones that don't look bad, there is still the loss of sad/angry/sick/battledome poses! That is really terrible I think. It's taken a lot of the fun away from the site.

Arggghh. Why can't they make all pets be able to stay in the old art? Or use the old art for everything, but stick the customize pictures only on lookups?

Regarding the editorial: If what they say is true about their main motivation being easier site navigation, why not just put up a Site Map? Interestingly enough, several years ago Adam was quoted in some article as saying that one of the things he was most proud of was that Neopets did not have a Site Map...

Has anyone else noticed that the Neofriend module on the left-hand side of the screen is reporting false "time online"? I got a Neomail today from a friend asking me why I had spent 10 hours on the site, lol! I logged in early this morning and spent about 20 minutes doing my dailies, and then I left the site. But I didn't officially log out, so she thought I'd been there all day! :P

My guess is that traffic dropped like it did last January (2006) because that was when the Cookie Grabber thug was attempting to hold us all hostage. He first did it in shops and user lookups. One day in early January, he really did damage to quite a few players--even a Neopets staffer and a few very high up players. Then he put them on petpages and some even said he was able to plant them in trading post descriptions and neomails. Each time Neo would fix coding so he couldn't plant a CGer, he'd figure out a new place to do so. He caused a great deal of panic on the site. And needless to say, pageviews would have been down quite a bit--since we were afraid to venture just about anywhere in Neopia for fear of losing our account to some nasty little thug.

SierraRaven, I've noticed the same thing with one of my Neofriends. She'll sign off, but the Neofriend checker will still say she's online. We think it's because she sometimes leaves a page up--it still counts her as "on" for as long as that one page is opened, even if she's been on the same page for hours.

I just wonder if the misleading time online will be used somehow by TNT to show how Neopians really like the massive changes, lol!

When I left the site after 20 minutes, I closed the page to Neopets, but left my browser open so I could surf other sites... o_O

Hey, have any of you guys here sent feedback to TNT?

From the editorial, they seem to be under the impression that the vast majority of people (aside from the crazies on the neoboards) really like all the changes. 0_o makes me wonder what planet they're living on. Although I bet saying that was just there way of telling us to shut up, it seems they were saying "we don't care how much you whine and complain, so live with it or leave, it's all the same to us"

Buuuuttt.... maybe if a whole lot of people sent in feedback with calm, intelligent comments and decisive, persuasive arguments and suggestions, combined with a big enough drop off in page views, they might stop and think. Surely losing a whole lot of long time players would hurt their profits, and they don't want that, right?

Probably not, it probably won't do jack, but it can't hurt to let them know how we feel, eh? They did ask for feedback after all.

I want them to answer some questions first, before I start firing off emails. Firstly about the layout(and since I've beat that to death, I'll stop there), and secondly about whether the redraws are considered mostly-permanent or if many are just prototypes until they have time to adjust the art, and finally if the option NOT to convert is permanent.
After that, if I decide to stay, I'll pelt them with feedback. If not, I'll send them an email saying "Congratulations, you've managed to drive another loyal user off the site." It seems the Neopets management has realized that customer loyalty isn't as much of an asset online as it is in the real world, though, so I doubt they'll care.

Yes, I did. A big 2-page letter, and a couple of editorials (although I must admit one was under a side account I haven't used in years. It was rather pointed)

The letter addressed other things as well though, but mostly the lack of all communication between users and staff. I also added that an auto-response would be an insult, and I didn't get one. I wonder if I'll get a response full stop. If I don't I'll just have to keep resending it until I DO get a response. I'm stubborn like that (the letter also mentions the 10 months of bugging TNT I did to get my Lab Ray back from a glitch).

Is it sad that I'm afraid to send in criticism under my real account because I'm afraid I might get frozen? I openly questioned whether or not they were actually going to be sad to see the long-time users leave because we can't stand any more of their smurf.

What makes me sad is that I doubt we'll get many questions answered in a timely fashion (if at all).

Maybe I'm wrong here, but I thought that TNT cared. If I recall correctly, a programmer visited here a few weeks back asking our opinion on the new adoption format. Our opinions counted enough then for them to come to these boards seeking input. Although there wasn't universal approval of the change, some of our suggestions were listened to.

I'm curious because they just... did... all of these changes without seeking out the advice of those who have assisted them in the past because of our common goal: to make Neopets an excellent site for visitors.

Blech. Redraws and redesign were just icing on the cake. I know *I've* been frustrated because many things I loved about Neopets has been ignored for a long time, and I kept hoping for things to get better. You know, wait out the storm and all. No new avatars? They'll come, if I'm patient. Plot prizes? They'll come if I'm patient. More interesting news? It'll come if I'm patient. Anything else? If we're patient, it'll eventually arrive.

I'm still sad that this was Neopets worst April Fool's prank ever. I now see why - all the energy of the team was going into the redesign and redraws. I'm trying to justify the lack of avatars for the same reason.

Here's my opinion on the revamp:

I for one am ok with the new look of the site. I haven't experienced any of the problems people are talking about - of having to scroll sideways on the pages. The layout displays fine for me using both my work computer and my home laptop. I know it will take a while to get used to navigating the site again, and I have to completely redo my user lookup and gallery lookup (which I spent hours creating), but these are things that don't bother me too much as they are both areas that can be changed and customised.

However, the one part of the revamp which cannot be changed and which I am extremely unhappy about is the new look of the pets. They look so... with their fists raised and the cutesy graphics, and the way that however they are painted they all look the same... there is nothing to make the painted ones stand out any more. :x To me, it is the one change on the site that has the biggest impact, and one which people are very unhappy about. I really hope that TNT listen to the users and do something about it (although I don't think they will).
