They do.

If you put a neopet in the pound, thier attached petpet does not revert to it's original form. It does revert if you unattach the petpet. A pile of soot attached to a pet will prevent it from being pounded until it is zapped into a recognized pet.

In only 14 zaps: 4 colour changes, 1 species change, and a gender oopsie ...this is a flexible pet! Edit: ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER COLOUR!
