Anyone mind explaining what exactly Indie music is? For some reason, I keep thinking it's lesser known rock bands.

It's basically just music that isn't in the mainstream (though http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indie_%28music%29 helps clarify things). I have a friend that assumes that when a band goes mainstream (or even semi-mainstream) that it "sucks", so if he likes an indie band and it goes mainstream, he then hates it for that reason (because they're "selling out").

It annoys the bloody heck out of me.

At the same time though, indie is too "broad" a term for me to be able to classify any of my music as "indie".

Ah thanks Kugetsu! In that case,

The Arcade Fire
BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE!!
Death From Above 1979
Feist
Frou Frou
Hot Hot Heat (Mainstream?)
Imogen Heap
Jack's Mannequin
Le Tigre
METRIC!!
The New Pornographers
Panic! At the Disco
Radiohead
Snow Patrol
STARS!!!!!!
Tegan and Sara
Yeah Yeah Yeahs

These are all mainstream bands now. But I do like some songs by some of the bands you posted.

That annoys me as well. If a band goes mainstream, it's their choice and as long as they don't change their style than it shouldn't affect his liking on them. If the band he likes suddenly changed into pop music, than I can see his point.

From Your List:

The Arcade Fire
Augustana
The Decemberists
Frou Frou
Imogen Heap
Murder by Death
Say Anything (fantastic and I want to marry them)
Snow Patrol
Something Corporate
Stars

Others I Like That You Didn't Mention:

Antony and the Johnsons
smurf Ponys
Coheed and Cambria
Motion City Soundtrack
Neutral Milk Hotel
Sigur Ros

Bolded ones are the ones I completely adore. As for what indie really is, eh... everybody really has their own definition of indie. A lot of the bands Pengy mentioned are ones I wouldn't consider indie, and a lot of the bands I mentioned would probably not be considered indie by other people. I haven't listened to a bunch of the ones she listed, either (but some, like Broken Social Scene, I've been planning to listen to for quite a while).

Depends on your definition of Indie. Some people say that Indie is any band that isn't signed onto a major record label (thus my listing of P!atD, since Fueled by Ramen isn't a major one) while others say that Indie is music that isn't mainstream. Whatever floats your boat I guess. :)

Bangel, you NEED to listen to Broken Social Scene right this second. They're asdfing amazing! :D Motion City Soundtrack is pretty good, but I really like only one of their songs. The Future Freaks Me Out. Any other recommendations?

Broken Social Scene and Stars are 2 of my very favourite bands.

Also (though varying degrees of indie-ness):
The Arcade Fire
Animal Collective
Ani DiFranco
Iron and Wine
Le Tigre
Metric
New Pornographers
Tegan and Sara
Wilco
Antony and the Johnsons
Xiu Xiu
Sigur Rós
Nathan Fake
M83
Acoustic Ladyland
Air
Angels of Light
Architecture in Helsinki
British Sea Power
Do Make Say Think
Calla
Kings of Convenience
Low
Mercury Rev
Outhud
Of Montreal
Spoon
Yo La Tengo
Xinlisupreme
dEUS
Enon
Les Savy Fav
Mull Historical Society
Van Dyke Parks
Kimya Dawson

Bla bla bla

By the way, it's bad enough you said snow patrol, but calling Panic! At The Disco indie is seriously sick. It's Emo lyrics over elevator music.

Plus, Pengy, you make no sense. You say Panic! At The Disco are indie because they aren't signed to a major record label, but you list The Smiths? Dude, I love The Smiths, but indie they ain't....they're (well, were) a pretty major band!
Likewise Snow Patrol, except I hate them.

Panic! doesn't get much plugging, so they are indie. So, Panic!, Jacobs Theory, Captured and DAYLIGHTwasting. :)

Are you for real?

I'd say the 349730635706735 people who bang on about them on Myspace while making sure their fringe still covers their left eye do a fair bit of plugging. As do TV adverts.
They don't NEED a huge marketing scheme because they have it in spades with all the kids who listen to them and think they're cool...

"The Future Freaks Me Out" makes me giggle. I have the "I Am the Movie" album as well as a couple of songs from "Commit This to Memory". My favorites besides "The Future Freaks Me Out" would probably consist of "Everything is Alright", "Perfect Teeth", "Capital H", and "Autographs and Apologies".

As for Panic! at the Disco, they are not indie. Indie doesn't really have anything to do with record labels (also, I disagree with you that Fueled by Ramen isn't very mainstream, considering Panic!'s evil clone, Fall Out Boy, is also hugely popular and on that label). It has to do with how mainstream the band is. Panic! is mainstream. Very mainstream. You do not sell out all your concerts in four minutes and NOT be mainstream.

Sure, maybe in a year from now when no one listens to them anymore, it will be less of a crime to refer to them as indie, but as for now... they fit more into the 'crap' genre (also know as pop-punk, emo, whatever, I don't care).

Hey, I'm a member of the Fall Out Boy fanclub :P

Here's some of mine, label them how you'd like! :)

From First To Last
Coheed & Cambria
Panic! At The Disco
Motion City Soundtrack
The Click Five
Taking Back Sunday
Fall Out Boy
The Rocket Summer
Reggie & The Full Effect
Hellogoodbye
The Academy Is...

I like HiM too, but they're pretty more hard rock! They can still be indie though :)

I cannot fathom a reply to such blasphemy. :P

And The Click Five is definitely not indie. They play their music videos on Disney Channel. That is so not indie.
