From the perspective of a fellow BD New Member I suggest you try and get some of these things:

Scarab Ring
Obsidian Dagger
Leaf Shield/Patched Magic Hat
Bone Sceptre
Rohane's Armour Polish
Caustic Potion/Mud Mixture

They're all pretty good low-level weapons, but super cheap. I don't know if there are better things to use in 2-player BD (I generall stick to 1-player) but I use a few of those and they've served me well so far.

Signature, eh? We'll see about that...

In trying to build up a good range of weapons, I noticed that there seems to be fewer with air attack and defence abilities. Can anyone recommend air weapons? I'd prefer the weapon to not be species specific (I primarily use my peophin, but the peophin lightning hooves have a low rating, and the full pephin armour is not rated), and not too expensive (past the 20k range). Thanks!

PS - I see that dark isn't represented well either, but I do have a scarab ring already.

Air is very uncommon in low and even mid-level battling -- you don't see a lot of it until people start using Pirate Captains Cutlass (16 mil) or Ghostkersword (even more expensive). The Wand of Reality does some, but it's 3.4 mil, so not in the price range you specified. Air Faerie Crown does a little, but it's still at least 1.5 mil. Psellias Fighting Fan does a little, and it's only 350-400k, so it may be your best bet. I can't think of any more off the top of my head; maybe someone else can.

Anyone who's working on a newbie set can check out my post on page 10. Admittedly, that's a purely offense-minded set (aside from the Downsize!), but it should get the job done. The newer good weapons (added since that post) are Psellias Fighting Fan (9 icons), Stone Club (9 icons) and Essence of Esophagor (10 icons). The first one is okay for 2-player, but the others are more 1-player weapons, as the icons can be easily blocked by leaf shield and the like. :)

Thank you very much, Cranberry. I'll take a look at your page 10!

No problem. And eclipse_matthew, you should get your strength and defense up to the 85 boost (and keep raising hit points as well). Your Ring of the Lost is a great weapon; hang on to that. The Rugged Zafara Short Sword is pretty weak, but does some nice icon types. You could replace it with a Psellias Fighting Fan, though, for more damage. Stone Club and Essence of Esophagor are also nice for 1-player. Leaf shield is a decent shield (or patched magic hat -- many people switch them out depending on the enemy). Scarab ring is okay, and scroll of dark nova is okay but nothing really special now. You should get a healer (greater healing scroll will work) and a freezer (snowglobe staff or black frost cannon, depending on budget). And a Honey Potion would be nice sometime, as everyone at that level could really use a bomb. But as for the multi-use weapons, at your level you should be into the 9 or 10-icon range instead of using mostly 6-iconers.

Have you thought about dual-duties? I did a post back on page 11 (near the bottom) listing some good ones.

And I did a bit of reading on DEFENCE, so for those who were asking:

Defence boosts and damage multipliers are the same as strength boosts and damage multipliers (see my list on page 12, or go here). However, there are two kinds of defence:

Percentage defence is the defence provided by stuff like Downsize! or Thyoras Tear. Those items block a certain percentage of an attack (Downsize! blocks half of every type of icon, for example). Ring of the Lost is like this as well (it blocks all dark). These weapons do not depend on your defence boost -- they do their percentage regardless of whether you have 10 defence or 200.

Non-percentage defence items are the ones that block a certain set number of icons (leaf shield, for example, blocks 5 earth icons, 5 water icons and 3 physical icons). They DO depend on your defence boost -- each icon wil block a certain amount of damage depending on your boost. To find out how much of an icon type you could block, you have to use this formula:

defence icons of the weapon x your stance multiplier x your defence boost's damage multiplier

So let's say I had 200 defence and I was using a leaf shield against an essence of esophagor, which does the full 5 icons of earth and 5 icons of water.

10 icons of defence (5 earth, 5 water) x cautious attack (0 multiplier) x 4.5 (the 200 boost's damage multiplier) = blocking 45 damage.

If the person using it also has the 200 strength boost and also used cautious attack, I will have blocked all of the damage from that EoE. (If they used berserk, they will have done a little damage, and if their strength boost is higher than my defence boost, they will also have got some damage through, simply because they can do more damage per icon than I can block.) Not bad for a simple little leaf shield. Now imagine if it were a dual duty instead, like Mask of Coltzan... I could be attacking with a bunch of hard-to-block fire while also defending myself against a bunch of damage. Defence is very useful.

tineforth, lab and TRAIN as well, to keep your stats balanced (I can't stress that enough). Train to the 55 boosts for strength and defence (or at least the 35 boosts) before you start worrying about weapons. Whatever you do, do NOT go out and spend 2 mil on good weapons now and beat up a whole bunch of low-level people in 2-player, because "n00binators" suck and are considered the scum of the BD by real battlers. Right now, some of the stuff in my long post on page 10 will work for you. Once you hit 35 or 55 (and eventually 85), you can start thinking about the Honey Potion and the Essence of Esophagor or Stone Club or Scuzzys Comb or whatever, but for now, training is way more important than any weapon.

As an example of what I mean when I keep saying training is more important than any weapon, let's say right now you used a Scuzzys Comb and an Essence of Esophagor and fierce attack (against someone who was frozen, just to make this easy).

20 (icons) x 0.75 (your damage multiplier) x 1.4 (fierce attack multiplies your original damage by 40%) = 21 damage.

A 35 booster will do:

20 x 1.5 x 1.4 = 42 damage

And a 55 booster will do:

20 x 2 x 1.4 = 56

And just for fun, see how right now if you went out and spent almost a mil on the S-Comb/EoE combo, you could do 21 damage? Let's see how that 35-booster could do if you took away one of his weapons and left him with just 10 icons.

10 x 1.5 x 1.4 = 21 damage.

Hee. He could at least tie you with one hand behind his back, and since he'd probably have more HP, he'd beat you. And he would have spent much less NP training to that boost than you would have spent on the extra weapon. A general rule is that a pet with good stats and decent weapons will almost always beat a pet with poor stats and great weapons. It's just the way it works -- training is the most important thing you can do, especially at low levels.

(Cranberry, I wish I was told to train and lab when I started. Now I have a 330hp pet with 26 defense -_- Anyways...)

I have a little healer question. I lab, so species healing really isn't an option. I have a blue SS but with 330hp it does absolutely nothing. Even upgrading to green doesn't really make sense to me.

Other than jade (waaay out of the price range) is the only option ice (which is a little too unreliable for me...)?

You're in the same boat as me (although I don't lab -- I just don't want to morph Alaskawolf). If you play 1-player only, you can use an Ice SS, but it only heals to full 24% of the time (the rest of the time it does nothing), so it will end up costing you a lot of battles or forcing you to withdraw and start over. The only other option is the Crisp Blue Tunic. It drains 100 HP from your opponent and heals you with it, so it's pretty awesome because you're really hurting your opponent while healing yourself a nice chunk of HP. However, it only works if you are down at least 100 HP and they have at least 100 left, so it can only be used in certain instances. Also, you need 750 intelligence to use it (although it's not too expensive to get to that level anymore). Bad news is that the tunic costs around 9 mil now.

Aside from that, there's really nothing. I usually can manage to stay alive by using one of the 33% healing faerie abilities (regeneration, restore, healing vapour) along with a greater healing scroll, but that's not perfect as it wastes a healer slot and some of my power. I'm really hoping the BD people create an all-species percentage healer very soon.

Nice, keeping the stats balanced. :) I'd say keep training (you will hit the 55 boost soon, which is nice). For 1 mil... hm.

Keep these:
-Downsize!
-Scuzzys Comb
-Quiggle Boomerang

Ditch these:
-Caustic Potion (bombs are useless when your main attacker does more icons, and the healing isn't enough)
-Flaming Bronze Helm (there are better items -- see below)

Get these:
-Greater Healing Scroll (heals 50 HP), 30k
-Leaf Shield (blocks water like the helm, except blocks earth too, which is more common), 10k
-Stone Club (pairs up okay with the comb, does 9 icons), 105k
-Snowglobe Staff (freezes an okay amount of the time), 25k
-Honey Potion (because you need a powerful bomb now that you're in the 9-10-icon range for main attackers), 740k

30+10+105+25+740 = 910,000 NP. Use the rest to train a bit more. :)

Deciding if I want to keep training my Krawk or not (I do want to reach 200 boosts, but my neopets time is going to be limited soon, and thus no source of income from reselling for a while)

Currently,
Level : 79
Health : 96 / 159
Mood : delighted!
Hunger : not hungry
Strength : ULTIMATE (158)
Defence : ULTIMATE (157)
Move : ULTIMATE (163)
Intelligence : ULTIMATE GENIUS (160)

My battle set:
ROTL
Scuzzys Comb
Leaf Shield
Downsize!
Greater Healing Scroll

I'm currently missing a freezer/healer. A couple of options with this. A snowglobe staff is easy to get, I just haven't bothered because I never bought a honey potion. I'm wondering, should I get the honey pot, or get the RCG, or save up for a ghostkerbomb?

I have about 3.5mil to spare right now.

Also, what weapon upgrades are advisable?
