i can't help but say that this is a silly thing to get upset about. for one, anthro is far more interesting and makes for better-looking art, and i'm sure it is much more fun for the artists to draw. it also helps distinguish the "character" neopets from the regular ones.

anthro neopets are fun. fun to look at, easier to identify with, more iconic. they work. if a neopets artist attempted to create a laser gun for a regular cybunny to hold, it would look stupid. it just would. and then you'd be complaining about the crappy quality of the artwork.

I agree with you, The Wonder Weezel. I've thought this before too. I'm not a fan of anthros either (I don't know if you are, but anyways..) and I do think it is going a bit far. Especially how some of the females are starting to look a bit too much like actual human girls.

Anyways, I don't mind some of the pets being a bit like people. Lisha is a very good example. She has clothing and is on her back feet, but she still looks like a lot like an Aisha. (not saying these human-like pets don't look like their species, I can tell what they are)

Would be rather weird if Rohane bounced around on his tail with no armor or sword (or for that matter, pants :P)

IMO, this is a non-issue. I have to say that a great deal of your examples still show Neopets that retain the important distinguishing physical characteristics while remaining vaguely humanlike in posture. Some are more humanlike than others, but I seriously doubt we're looking at a gradual progression into Neopets that look more and more like people. I remember people here complaining when "people" (such as the Coconut Tribes of Mystery Island) were turned into Neopets. At least they aren't going to do anything to the Tiki Tack Man. :)

I must also point out that before when many images you had were up, that Sloth and Blugthak clearly aren't neopets and are made to be anthro..

I never post here..I joined ages ago yet never haven't posted since then =P I should possibly lurk and/or post here more often...

I dunno. I think these anthro pets aint too bad. Like many people have said, it lets you distinguish them between other pets.

Maybe there is something about our pets being wild and heroic ones being, well, human-like (i forgot who said that, and couldn't be bothered quoting. Sorry).

I don's see many, if any problems with making hero pets human-like. It gives them more personality. I mean, it just makes you like them more. If I could have a Galem for a pet, I would.

It really doesn't bother me....they are cartoons. Like Disney characters they have the human characteristics but remain the animal they are. This is major overreacting in my opinion.

I notice you keep going back to the old Maraqua plot. Personally? I don't think the stuff in there is cool at all? And I hate to break it to you, but the Koi king would still be concidered Anthro. As the years have passed the art has evolved, and methods for doing the plots have changed...I'm sure they want their characters to be a lot more cartoon like, able to interact with each other in more ways than a normal neopet.

<STOWA|Sleep> my sister questioned the title. "Half Blooded Prince? Does that mean he's a Moogle"

Hmm, it's interesting for me to find out that there would be so much debate over this since I've always thought about Neopets as having human like intelligence. It seems like most people act that way too, in many stories I've read based on Neopets, the pets are always like kids with the owner in the role of parent and the pets all have very humanistic traits. Now of course that is the interpretation of us users and perhaps not the way Neopets had originally imagined the pets, but I think it works.

As far as the humanoid shaped pets that star in plots and what not, I never really had a problem with it. I think our little pets would look similar if they were grown up and walked on two feet all the time and worked out 5 days a week (unless

Anthro can vouch for two ways - animals with humanistic features (truer anthro, weres, digigrade anthros, etc) or those humans with animal features (Nekos, cat-girls, the type of people crazy enough to act like animals, etc).

Having been an anthro artist for just shy of 16 years, it was inevitable that Neopets would go that way. How, say, would a four-legged clothed feline that speaks and carries a weapon with no opposable thumb look in comparison to a two-legged version with at least some humanistic abilities; ie, carrying a weapon/backpack/wearing clothes/etc?

Truth is, I don't think there's much to discuss on the matter at hand. Some like it, others don't. But it's been around for a while, on most occasions longer than any of us have been around.

Just my two cents...

I'm not a fan of overly anthro Neopets. I believe that talent is talent regardless of subject, and taken out of context there's no denying the talent of Neopets artists. It's the inconsistency and contradictions that they evoke that really bother me. It's becoming more and more prevalent and to me, shows nothing but a total lack of creativity and pure sloth. The notion that only human characters can have depth and personality is utter nonsense. Donna's editorial statements more or less stating that no one would find Kanrik interesting if he wasn't some furry blue man with ears and a tail made me want to reach out and touch someone, with the back of my right hand.

A normal aisha shouldn't be able to wield a sword or type a novel with it's paws. An usul shouldn't have long flowing hair and breasts. Those aren't the natural characteristics of the pets. No, it doesn't make sense for a gelert to try and wield two blades designed for human hands using doggie paws. I'm in complete agreement. So instead of trying to force human physical traits onto our pets, why not let them use their own. Maybe Kanrik wouldn't have twin daggers, but special armored claws. And if you think battles would be boring because of this, go watch Wolf's Rain or heck, even some of the Pokemon battles.

Appearance plays a huge part of Neopets, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. What would Neopets be like without the ability to alter the standard look of your pet? It isn't so much that there are anthro pets. The Halloween lupe and moehog, along with the mutant ixi are wonderful colors. It's the fact that Neopets switches from anthropoid bipeds to quadrupeds without acknowledging the difference. For the aforementioned pet colors, there's a reason and acknowledgment of difference, where everywhere else there is none.

The species in plots and the ones we own live in two entirely separate and opposing universes. There's one where humans exists as owners and companions, and another where we've been eradicated and replaced by human pet hybrids. There's certainly no easy way to combine the two except by pretending the other universe doesn't exist and that's...stupid.

Sorry, I can't think of another word. But, would it really have been such an enormous effort to try and create a consistent fantasy world where humans and Neopets coexist? I wouldn't call Pokemon, Digimon, or Monster Rancher the greatest fantasy works of our time, but they all seem to do it just fine. After playing World of Warcraft for a few weeks and admiring all the Hunters and their pets, I could easily imagine a Neopets universe that makes sense, as far as any place with a world made entirely of Jell-O could, where owners work with pets to make up for their lack of opposable thumbs.

/end sleepy rant

And yes, Mynci's and their meepits would rule the world.
