IMHO the only ones "getting an upper hand" are the company providing the service and whatever Neopets is getting.

So far the only thing I can really say is an advantage is No Ads. Yes, it's the first night I've had it ... but nothing else of note, the premium board isn't "elite", just folks and it's actually pretty quiet. Well, maybe that is another advantage.

Am I the only one who thinks that the 8$ a month is NOT a big deal?

That's one hour of work at minimum wage (almost) in Canada. Compare that to HOW many hours you spend a MONTH playing neopets?

8$ is 8 chocolate bars,
6 cups of small regular coffee,
two cups of specialty coffee,
1-2 fast food meals,
less than a movie ticket,
less than a paperback,
8$ is NOT that much money for an entertainment product.

I'm a working university student on student assistance and a tight budget, but I can fit 8$ a month into my budget for something I spend alot of free time on. I don't need better grade eggs or fancy bread or any of those other items we waste cash on without even BLINKING AN EYE in a grocery store, I don't need those things I mentioned above, because just give me a banner-free neo and some cute perks and I'm set.

If you still can't justify it, DON'T BOTHER, you don't need it. It's not neccessary. Don't worry about what MIGHT happen, because you can't predict the future.

*I'm not a premium member, but after seeing the trial I just might try it.

Actually, I think if someone is going to dish out $8 a month, they deserve a little extra. I mean, it's not like they are getting any real advantages. They have some nice things tossed their way like a special scratchcard on Fridays, 1k np, beta testing, their own board, no banner aes, but if you think about it, that's not really much.

There's not really anything to get upset about. If they get their own world and pet species and paint brush, etc. etc., then I'd be upset. ;) I still think it was *way* over priced for what it offers. If someone is going to pay that, though, they deserve a little extra as long as it's not going to outbalance the game.

This is a lot like what pogo did. The site has been free for many years. Everyone can still play for free, but now you can pay to be a club pogo member. There are perks. Some club pogo only games and each week they have 2 challenges that if you complete them you get badges for them. The badges show up in the game rooms. The club pogo games have levels as you progress through the games, you get badges for different levels. They are like avatars that everyone can see, but only the paying members get them. People can click on your profile and see all the badges you have. There are member only rooms also. Most of the rooms have jackpots. Club members jackpots are doubled. You don't get intermission ads. Nothing has changed for the non paying members. The site plays the same as ever with the exception of many new games being created with the money the club members are paying. For paying members, it is a totally different game site now. I have no problem paying to be a club pogo member. It really makes the site more enjoyable for me. For some reason, I just can't see paying to play neopets. The perks are not substantial enough to make me want to do it.

I guess what I am saying is, pogo is now two different sites in one. Most club members never see non paying members unless they choose to go into a non member room. That is a huge difference from what neopets is doing. To me, they want us to pay to play the exact same way we play for free with the exception of a few minor details.

Yes, I have no life. I'm on Neo like every day for at least 6 hours.

And I don't have Premium.:P So the most addictive players aren't the ones who have Premium.

Yeh well.. XD Same story here. And I still don't think I'm that much of an addict. lol

Ahem... getting off-topic...

Eight dollars is a lot to me, seeing as I do not have a job yet because I need to do 75 volunteer hours. My parents would never let me use $8 a month for Neo because they HATE Neopets so much. :P

Let's keep on topic, because it'll be a hassle to trudge that all up again, and I'll fly in to a fit of apopletic rage if I have to think about that whole mess again.

Freankley, I think you need to think of it as a donation to keep neo afloat.

Yes, I know thats what the banners are for...but considering:
1: The number of people using codes to make the banners go away.
2. Think about this: The number of servers alone is probably enough to rack up large charges each month, not to mention bills, paychecks, etc

Allbeit, 8$ is a lot for a child, or young adult still starting out, And for those of you saying that you don't get much:
1. Premiuim is still starting up, and they're still adding things for it(the board for an example)
2. Would you REALLY want preium members to get a ton more things than the non-payers?

I'm curious, how did those of you that signed up for the premium within the past few days do it?

Reason I ask is that I tried and ended up calling and was told that No one could sign up for it until Dec 20th when it became available to the public.

I actually would like Premies to get more benefits... not new games or anything, but new features like maybe a user block feature on the boards or something. :) Then I would buy it.

I disagree. I think neo does well to keep itself afloat.

1. Plushie profits.
2. T-shirt and clothing profits.
3. Some of the BIGGEST sponsors in the business (McDonalds, Kraft, Coca-Cola, etc...etc..) who pay them for advertising and product placement.
4. Upcoming PS2 game coming up which you KNOW they got paid a nice chunk o' change for...surely.
5. The previous Happy Meal toy craze, which they will no doubt recieve large royalties for from America's most famous clown. *cough*
6. TCG cards profits.
7. Pay for clicks from shop of offers no doubt brings them some income.
8. Various other merchandise (including Limited Too, the previous deal with Claire's, etc....)

All of this IMO probably was more than enough to keep Neo "afloat". Other sites have been able to maintain for less. And all the examples are without the big cash cow of:

9. Blatant banner advertising
10. Pay for premium service
11. Paid ISP service tie-in.

It's not about keeping neo afloat. It's now about profits. I really, seriously and honestly doubt within an inch of my existance the site is in any danger or that these newest changes were needed to "save the site", but I do see it as an awfully good "excuse" to cover the profiteering.

Not that profiting is bad, I just like having being delt with honestly. If they came in on the Editorial and said "We did it because we all want to drive a new Mercedes." I'd tip my hat with a smile. But saying "We have to do it to stay alive" is a whole different ballpark.

Just my opinion. *shrug*
