Yes, give-aways will get you iced.

Best thing to do is get a bunch of friends and make trades or send people random items :)

If you're advertising, then yes, you can get frozen.

If you really want to give these things away, stick them on the money tree instead, or just randomly give them to names you see on the neoboards.

Anyone knows Grammar_Faerie onthe BD neoboards. She was frozen last night for, pretty much that reason. If you used correct grammer, she would give you a prize and it counted as a contest and she was frozen. :(

She was teaching some proper grammar and was frozen for giving prizes to good grammar user. -.-

You can give things away, you just can't advertise you are doing so.

Yup, giving things away is okay.

Giving things away on the neoboards, and creating a board that you are giving something away/having a contest for a prize/starting an FTP (first to post) board will all get you a warning, and possibly a trip to iceland.

I've seen people warned and iced for it, and it does exist. ;) Best to be careful.

I know what you mean though, it's a lot of fun to give things away. It's always "technically" been against the rules, though. Just in the past TNT never bothered anyone about it. They started cracking down last October though, and I stopped doing my own giveaways then. :(

Oh yeah, people will report allllllllllll over that. :) I'm sure you had good intentions, but most posts that promise free paint brushes never give them out...people report them immediately as OT posts, simply because they assume you are lying...

But those things never end nice anyhow. :) Even if you gave a brush to someone, the angry folks who didn't get something would call you a scammer, a liar, and say the person you gave the brush to was a friend or your own spare account. :P You're better off not doing those, it's just opening up a huge can of worms. ;)

I have a lot of experience in this area. My daughter's account was frozen last December for giving away Christmas presents on the help chat--no strings attached. And, as most of the old PPTers know, I got the account back a day after I emailed the staff. My email contained several arguments to point out their error and a lot of evidence to back thos arguments up.

Technically, giving things away on the chat board is not against the rules. There is nothing written in the rules stating this. However, "give-aways" are against the rules. A give-away is a completely different concept than the act of giving something away. A give-away is a contest--like the kind you hear about on radio stations--"Be caller number 7 and win a prize." The person has to do something in order to be given the prize. Giving things away without asking for anything in return is not a contest.

So, when you say "I will give a negg to the first person who answers my question" that is considered a "give-away"--a contest. And, if you say "I am giving gifts out to people," that, technically, is not a contest.

However, please note my use of the word "technically." Neo has been known to freeze people who innocently give away gifts--even though it isn't considered a contest or a "giveaway." A Neo staffer admitted to me in the email that because of the sheer number of posts on the chat boards, the staff often has to rely on the players' reports to enforce the rules. And as my daughter's situation proves, the staffer doesn't always read the whole thread to see if the person doing the reporting has a legitimate claim. It appears that they often push the freeze button without even looking at the post.

So, if a player doesn't know the difference between a person holding a "give-away' (against the rules) and a person "giving things away" (technically not against the rules) and decides to report you, you can get frozen. If a disgruntled, angry, mean-spirited jealous person reports you, you can get frozen.

And, the staffer stated that even if it isn't against the rules, the giving away of gifts on the boards is highly discouraged, because often the gift-giver does it with the intent to get something in return.

So, even if it is not technically against the rules, it is not worth the hassle trying to get your account back. We were lucky in getting my daughter's account back. I think the fact that her dear old mom wrote the letter helped. As did my legal education and background--both in showing to the staff that I was an professional adult and in helping me to write a letter that successfully argued my case. But the letter took hours and hours to write--I gathered several pages of evidence and did quite a bit of research of the rules--to show that there was no rule in writing and that, even if it was a rule, it was being unfairly applied.

I know many others who have never been as lucky.

And, if you want to give out gifts, you can always do so on PPT.

You can't just get frozen for giving things to people - thats why there is a giving items option, but what you can't do is make an item 'giveaway' or 'raffle' board. TNT will freeze you for doing that.

:roflol: I really LIKE that! :roflol:

Thankx

SUGGESTION: I used to post boards like
"What have you done that is NICE for your fellow Neopians today?"
and then give random items to people who post.
It's not a contest and people are genuinely surprised!

IMO, it is totally pointless to freeze people who hold giveaways. Why?

1) Even if the people who promised presents don't give them, it is still not scamming or anything, since all the "victims" have lost are hopes of receiving a gift. At most, such people should get a warning.

2) Many people do really give out the gifts promised, and freezing them is totally unreasonable. It will only result in those generous people becoming cold and selfish, due to their bitter past experience of being frozen for performing deeds of kindness. Furthermore, people who want to give things out will not dare to, since they are afraid of getting frozen.

Yes, that is exactly the way my daughter felt when her account was frozen after giving away Christmas gifts last year. Talk about crushed. I only wish the Neo staff could have been here to hear her sobs and wipe away her innocent 11 year old tears. And, why did she think about doing so? Because she had experienced a windfall and wanted to share some of her nps with others who weren't as fortunate. Oh, if only my legs were long enough to reach to California. I would kick every one of them for being so horribly mean and short-sighted.

If you want to hold a giveaway, just do it on PPT. That's what I do. I hold one every month here. My October is going to be a Halloween giveaway, so I've been saving up. :)

I try to never post on the neoboards. It's too much trouble for something you can safely do here on PPT. :)
