Windows XP Service Pack 2

The final build is up on M$'s website. It's supposed to "fix" stuff and plug security holes. But is this service pack all that it's hyped up to be? If you downloaded this update, post your experiences with it.

For myself, I haven't had a very decent experience with Service Pack 2 so far. My PC has been running slowly. I noticed that my system cache had about 90% of my RAM, leaving very little for my system to access. Bringing up the Start menu takes one long second. StyleXP stopped working, so I had to get a new version. It complains about the Windows Firewall and urges you to turn on Automatic Updates, and suggests (more like pressuring) you to use an Antivirus.

While I was working, I had to deploy seven PCs to an electrical company's office. All the PCs contained Windows XP Service Pack 2. The computers needed to use WinFax Pro, and some CAD software. When I installed the software, WinFax wouldn't work, as well as the other software. (WinFax works with SP1a.) The user settings and privilages would not save if the user was logging in through a domain.

I think in a week or so, there will be waves of patches to fix SP2.

I'm not gonna download SP2, as I have been hearing the bad things about it from my friends.

Good move. SP2 can shut off programs which seem to be 'unsafe'. Which, that could mean RealPlayer, iTunes, and any other program which is most likely not made my Microsoft.

Mine is working just fine. The only differences I have noticed are the annoying pop up blocker sounds and the fact that StyleXP doesn't work with the new service pack. That's not a problem, though. I have never upgraded my StyleXP, so I suppose I should do so. ;P

M$ won't make me. I have regular xp, no sp nothing. no antivirus. no firewall. they're not making me get it, or anything else.

I've heard nothing but bad things about it, good thing I dont have Windows XP.

I'm not going to chance it shutting off Norton. I think I'll stick with SP1.

A lot of antivirus and firewall software companies have to redo some of their products because of the service pack. Microsoft made some changes that could stop those programs from working.

After going thru the nightmare of IE6 SP1 I would not recommend anyone using this download out of the gate. There is already a site that has listed 50 programs that will not work with SP2. There is also another site that has announced some of the warnings have been hacked into.

As for my IE6 SP1 problems? I fdisked the hard drive, reinstalled and stayed with IE5. Since then I only use the Windblows operating system off line. That's the safest way to be.
