Heres my problem.

I finally got rid of my 5 year old hard drive and bought a new one. Everything is great, yaddayaddayadda, but I cant shut it down.

I click on shut down, okay, and it shuts down, its normal, until the very very end. Where its just this black screen, normally, a computer would then turn off, but my computer just stays a black screen. I'll have to unplug it to turn it off. This has happened ever since I bought it, from Day 1. Is it a hardware problem or what?

If your hard drive came with some kind of driver CD, it would be a good idea to insert it.

Not so long ago, computers didn't turn off when you clicked shutdown. They'd just sit there and say "It's now safe to turn off your computer", and wait for you push the power button. However, with the advent of ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface), computers learned to turn themselves off (and power buttons became logical "soft" buttons, rather than the hard switches they were before -- you may want to hold the power button for 5 or more seconds for it to turn off your PC (it just asks your OS to turn off your PC otherwise)). It can be that your new hard drive confused your OS, and it now thinks it can't turn itself off.

Alright, here's the deal. Since I'm a Roadrunner customer we get CA's ez Armor Suite for free, and the subscription free for one year ($100). THe problem is when I tried to upgrade mine, it said the installation for the AV failed. So, I tried different things a few more times, and now it won't install the firewall either. So I've had to install ZoneAlarm Security Suite, but since it's only for 15 days I want this fixed.

Call Roadrunner. They'll probably tell you to call CA. Call CA.

(There's no way I can tell you why your installation failed out of "it said the installation for the AV failed". It could be anything.)

Dur, I'm not sure if this goes here or I should make a new topic or not.

There's this annoying problem I have with Firefox. Whenever a javascript window pops up asking you to choose 'okay' or 'cancel', like when restocking or playing round table poker, it registers anything I do as an 'okay'. Say I'm playing poker and it's my turn to discard. If I accidentally click discard without choosing any cards a window will pop up asking if I want to keep all of my cards. If I pick 'okay' it will keep all my cards. If I pick 'cancel' it will keep all my cards. If I'm at the Igloo Garage Sale trying to restock and click on an item I don't want and it asks me if I truly wish to purchase said item, it will go through with the purchase regardless of what I choose. It hasn't always done this and I'm not sure when it started, but I do have the latest version of firefox and adaware and spybot aren't picking up anything.

Help?

I'm having an issue with Firefox. To make a long story short the first time I downloaded firefox it worked great and then suddenly died. I had to reinstall it. Well I reinstalled it and managed to fix it so it blocked all the ads on neopets (I don't want to have to do that again), however when I was using it a few weeks ago, it opened up a window about updating firefox. I clicked yes, and it updated. But now whenever I try to open firefox it says "program must close to allow a previous installation atempt to complete please restart", I can't get it to go away, even if I restart. Is there a way to fix this? I'd hate to have to reinstall it AGAIN and do all the adblocking over. o_O

Is there a way for song titles in Winamp to be able to display the Chinese characters?

Okay, here's the problem. We have Windows XP Professional, and my brother has somehow blocked me from getting into his files, and neither of us can figure out how he did it and how to undo it. Don't worry, I've told him about it, and he says he would unblock it but he doesn't remember how he did in the first place (typical). When I try to get into his stuff by going to C:\Documents and Settings\Joe (his file), a little thing pops up saying "C:\Documents and Settings\Joe is not accessible. Access is denied." Now, I only want to get into his stuff to copy music off his desktop that he downloads and I like, so it's not like I'm gonna delete his stuff or anything. Plus, I can't use bittorrent but he can, which would probably have something to do with that.

Help?

Well, for that whole Bit Torrent thing, it might be because he has different user permissions set by your administrator. As to get to his files, log on as him, then right click the folder you want to be able to access. There should be a tab at the top labeled "Sharing." The option to disable people from viewing files is in that area.

I need help again.

We reformatted our computer (for the third time). Everything is fine and dandy, except for these stupid pop-ups that come out of nowhere! They look like normal windows, except they just pop-up without warning in front of any windows you have open, saying stuff like "Your computer could be infected, go to (website) to get it scanned)", and an OK button that just closes it. Very annoying when trying to play Flash games (like on Neopets). I have Windows XP. HOW DO I GET RID OF THEM?!

EDIT: Fixed, apparently... nevermind this post.

Lately I've been having some DSL trouble. Slow, laggy connections, and error messages popping up (especially during the Blizzard Updater and BitComet) that I'll have a slow connection because I have a firewall deployed (which I don't.) All of these things would fall under the typical internet problem, but here's the twist. Everytime a phone call comes in or comes out, my DSL will completely reboot itself and go through its connection cycle again. Does my new wireless router have anything to do with it? (I use a normal desktop computer)

Here's a screencap of my Network Connections page: http://tinyurl.com/7joo2

You're on a DSL line, which means that you're probably using a router. A router will drop the incoming BitTorrent connections unless NAT / port forwarding is set up. Your router counts as a firewall by default. Blizzard Downloader and BitComet are using the BitTorrent protocol, so they suffer from the same problem -- people are not able to connect to you, reducing your download speed.

Your "disconnect on phone call" problem is caused by a lack of a special filter on your phone connection. The DSL modem and phone share the same telephone line, but operate on different frequencies. The two devices interfere with each other, causing a disconnect when you use your phone.
http://www.homephonewiring.com/dsl.html and http://www.hometech.com/learn/dsl.html have more detail about this

It's possible that someone recently disconnected a filter from one of your phone connections -- or perhaps it simply never was there. Call your DSL provider, and they'll tell you what sort of filter you need, and where you can buy it.

I am having the same problem as Huggles with firefox. It just happened tonight. I went to buy something in a shop. The Javascript window came up asking me if I was sure that I wanted to buy that item with OK and cancel buttons. I had accidentally clicked on the wrong item and so hit the cancel button. But, it acted as if I hit OK. It went through with the purchase, giving me the item and having nps deducted for its price despite the fact that I hit the cancel button.

Luckily for me, this was a little mistake that only cost me a few nps. But, I can see the possibility of a big mistake occurring if I am not careful. Anyone else having this problem? Anyone know how to fix it?

Hey, I just re-formatted my sister's laptop (with her consent of course). We re-installed Windows, but we can't get it back to connecting to the internet. We have a broadband connection (a cable modem, I'm pretty sure) with a router hooked up to that. Both of our computers are currently hooked up to the router via phone cord-like cords. The router also works wirelessly, and normally my sister just uses her laptop up in her room instead of the basement. Does anyone know how to set up an internet connection like that? Any help, even just suggestions of things to try would be appreciated.

*Wanders out of the neopets forums* Whoa. This is a first.
Today I was stupid and did something to firefox I can't figure out how to reverse. When I was viewing a user lookup at neo, they had one of those annoying backgrounds to where you can't read anything on their lookup, so I right clicked, and selected "block images from photobucket." I saw the lookup finally, and went on my merry way. Later noticed I can't see half of PPTers' avatars and such because I've blocked photobucket! I looked through "options" but I don't see anywhere to fix this. Help?
Also, I updated Firefox the other day and it got rid of my Adblock for some reason, is there a way to get it (+ all the things I've ever blocked) back?
Thanks! :)

Edit: I hate the filters here :|

Another Firefox problem.

A while back ago, something happened (I haven't figured it out to this day), and I was unable to open up new windows. I had to right click on a link and saw "open in a new tab". Of course, this is very annoying. Sometimes, things like Neopets' games, cannot be opened, since their link is 'javascript;;'.

Anyone know how to fix this? In the end, I just gave it up since FF was getting slower and slower.

I'm back to IE now. Maybe Opera, but that's slow too.

Ogm is evil, use either Windows Media Classic, or VLC player to watch it.

Anyway, might as well see what anyone has to say about my photoshop.

I'm running photoshop 7, 1.8ghz comp (p4), 512mb RAM, and it is becoming a massive pain to use.

What it does it that it refuses to load new things, like if I go File->new image, it will freeze, but if I load an image already made it will load properly, and then I just have to resize it to the right shape to make a new image. Similarly I can't make a 'new' layer, I can duplicate layers and clear the image off one of them but still. I cannot use the Adjustments, or the image effects either.
