I think that's what they nomally do. They put them in under the guise of "experimental" or "temporary" and then wait a week for everyone to get used to the idea, then they start to exasperate the problem. For instance when the banner first came out it was supposed to be neopets images only, then they slowly integrated outside links.
I agree. It's the case of the camel in the tent, they slowly introduce a concept to get us used to it, then expand on it and make it worse and worse. Like the top banner, it started with mainly Neopets ads only, then it progressed to a larger and unsightly one, and next outside ads started to become the main ads in the banner.
I can foresee the same happening with the bottom banner too. Soon they will see, "Sorry guys, but we really don't have enough money, so now we will have ads on the far right side of each page too. Don't worry, you'll never have ads on your user-lookup!"
The next month, they will say, "We are so sorry and we really don't like this, but due to rising costs we need to include pop-ups too. Don't worry, you'll only get pop-ups on the Neopets home page." But without us knowing it soon there will be pop-ups all over the place.
Lastly, one fine day when we log on to Neopets, we will be redirected to a search portal type page named "Neoads.com".
