I don't mind the top ad, it's the bottom I hate. And I'm glad the top one's gone in firefox like it was in ie with the .css file thing. But even if it wasn't, it's the bottom one I loathe.

Ooh, this probably is going to split again...

Ahh but thats still an 'experimental' stage. They might, for all I know, get rid of the top banner and replace it with the bottom one. That, would be excellent, and I'll have no problem. Combining the two however will get me really angry. Very angry. So I'm waiting for the big-real-major announcement here

Do you really think they're going to make a big major announcement? At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if they never said another word about it, and just left em in.

Me in a dress - that's a once in a lifetime opportunity

I think that's what they nomally do. They put them in under the guise of "experimental" or "temporary" and then wait a week for everyone to get used to the idea, then they start to exasperate the problem. For instance when the banner first came out it was supposed to be neopets images only, then they slowly integrated outside links.

I'm finally back for the summer, although hopefully I'll spend a little more time away from this screen.

They have officially gone too far. Even more than before.

I just found an ad that said, "Buy Legal Steroids!"

a) There's no such thing, unless you're a physician.
b) Those things can, and will, REALLY mess up a human body, especially one that's still growing.

I am writing a very angry letter. This nonsense has to be stopped.

shapu, I am with you all the way here. Won't elaborate but personal experience with prescribed steroids made me very aware of the bad affects of them. If I happen to capture a screenie, I will let you know.

I agree. It's the case of the camel in the tent, they slowly introduce a concept to get us used to it, then expand on it and make it worse and worse. Like the top banner, it started with mainly Neopets ads only, then it progressed to a larger and unsightly one, and next outside ads started to become the main ads in the banner.

I can foresee the same happening with the bottom banner too. Soon they will see, "Sorry guys, but we really don't have enough money, so now we will have ads on the far right side of each page too. Don't worry, you'll never have ads on your user-lookup!"

The next month, they will say, "We are so sorry and we really don't like this, but due to rising costs we need to include pop-ups too. Don't worry, you'll only get pop-ups on the Neopets home page." But without us knowing it soon there will be pop-ups all over the place.

Lastly, one fine day when we log on to Neopets, we will be redirected to a search portal type page named "Neoads.com".

Morningstar, I've had my own experience with steroids - prescribed for something specific .... horrible stuff. And that doesn't sound like what's being advertised.

I went onto my gallery and refreshed and cruised the site looking for that ad, kept getting classmates and the annoying loony toons cursor ads at the bottom - no "legal steroid" ad. This may be another age-targeted/gender targeted type of ad (young men).

I can now tell you that some of the topbanners? If you view source on some of them it has your username, gender, country, dob, zipcode. Not all of them, not all the time. I had a no-ad, just big yellow rectangle. Curious as to what it should or would have been, I checked the source. Did not like seeing that information there. Someone is tracking this, I'm going to guess for future ad rotations.

This is true, I noticed it when they first started the outside banners. Does Neopets know that they do this? I think they'd have to...

i just keep getting more creeped out and disheartened by all of this :(

i really don't like the idea of being used for market research.

also the fact that adam (borovan adam) doesn't come in here to discuss this with us anymore kind of worries me.

Ugh. The Site is starting to lag again, and it wasnt that great already.
The quality of the site has been declining steadily for a while now.
Guess thats what happens when you get bought out by a selfish, uncaring, flippin' idiot.

A cup? Dont be daft! I chased him with a thermos! It keeps the Borovan warm! :) Not that I'd need to keep Borovan warm for any non drinking related reasons. *shifty eyes*

Anywho, back on topic, if the sorce code has your information in it, then the ads are probably age/sex/location grouped as many may have mentioned...

I'm very disturbed by this tracking information. I'm almost tempted to print out all three of these threads in their entirety and drop them in a snail mail to Neopets. If they don't know about such things as the tracking and the questionable content, they should. If they do know, then the least we can do is let them know that we're mad about it.

You know, the parents of younger children could easily sue Neopets. If they can just get one screenshot of an inappropriate ad.
I can't tell you the joy I would have, turning on the television set and seeing, in bold letters, "Dohring, president of Neopets Inc. , was taken to court today for viagra ads on a childrens site".
Meh. It wont happen.
I'm really disgusted right now with the type of ads I see.
I hope Dohring ends up broke. :x
