Bad Bad Neopets! Bad!

Sat Jun 24, 2006 12:45 pm

On the way to the Mystery Island Training School a thingy came up saying something about file not available, and then AVG my security program popped up saying that it detected a trojan named something about "bl4ck" and I healed it. I hit the back button so I could get a screen capture of the offending ad to report it, and this time the file was available and took over my whole screen. It kept demanding that I "click yes" riiiight.

I had to ctrl+alt+delete to get out of it and of course I have lost the offending page. Scary though. My program caught it the second time too. Now I am considering taking a long break from Neopets.

Be careful!

I wish I didn't have to worry about my computer getting trojans from Neopets. Awful! :x

Huh

I REALLY don't think this came from neopets. You can report it to them, but it just doesn't make any sense...

But their page did it to me TWICE. The same page. That can't be a coincidence. I didn't even have PPT open when it happened, just Neopets. How is that so unbelievable anyway? It's not like they screen their ads or maintain control over the content in them. We've discussed this before. If they do screen their ads before they agree to post them, they don't store them on their own servers to make sure they stay the same. The company they sold the ad space to can sneak something new in.

Why don't you use a browser that blocks the ads and avoid them all together? I think firefox blocks them. :)

firefox blocks MOST of them. i think the best is to use adblock

I have premium neopets so I don't get any at all, which is so so nice.

I think that is going to be my solution. TG for Firefox!

There have been a few ads on Neopets causing pop-up ads, because the advertisers snuck scripts into their space  . You can stop those by clicking Tools -> Adblock -> List All Blockable Elements. Then you just search that list for anything not from Neopets or Macromedia, and block it. I always put asterisks in place of anything they may change, such as numbers or folders.

That's not really a solution. It's mafia-esque. "Pay us and we won't try to damage your computer".

It was for me! Basically for a site I spend so much time on $7/month is not much to pay for the convience of having everything on one page, no ads, and of course, the SSW. :)

It would be nice though to have a Mac and Premium. ;) :battar:

Maybe you should report that to Neopets so they can check things on their end.
