Anything and everything goes in here... within reason.

Ok, starting on June 11th, I'll be taking a course to become a lifegaurd. Has anyone here done that before? If so, what is expected of you? I'm a litte (ok, a LOT) nervous about this....

Ooh, how exciting! I've never done that before, but I think the main thing that is expected of you is being a REALLY good swimmer. Plus I think you have to practice CPR and rescue fake people in the water. I also think whistle-blowing skills are required as well.

That sounds cool. A couple of people I know have done those courses - you need to be fit, and like Dawn said, a strong swimmer. I'm pretty sure you also have to complete a first aid course so that you're qualified to be an actual lifeguard. Good luck on your course

I know you're meant to be able to swin certain lengths, but that's all I know. Good luck with it though.

Oh wow that's great Robin! I've always wanted to do that. Lifeguards, beach... sun... wow that's awsome. *ads to to-do list again*

OH NO! Now I really can't do it!
Joking, but there are requirments just to get INTO the course.
Swim 500 Meteres non-stop (100 front crawl, 100 breathstroke, 100 sidestroke, other 200 your choice) and retrive a 10lb weight from 9 ft deep.

I think they also have to teach you how to perform CPR.

I'm sure they do. What I posted was the requirements just to GET INTO the course! I'm going to be swimming every day for 2 weeks! Fun, but tiring. I hope I'll still be able to get on PPT some...

I'm probably going to try for that in the summer....I had to get Bronze Star to get into Bronze Medallion...I did that, now I can do Bronze Cross and I think I can get hired.

I did a lifesaver badge, I had to do what you said, except less swimming, and we had to be able to take off our clothes (with swimsuit underneath thankyouverymuch) while treading water.
No CPR though...haha

Practice your whistle blowing skills, and yelling the word "shark" really, really loud.
Fri Jun 04, 2004 5:25 am
Cool! Will you get to move in slow motion like on Baywatch? XD (Sorry, couldn't resist.)
It sounds really cool, actually.

Do you really have to know how to whistle? Oh no.. does anyone here know how to do it and be able to teach?
Fri Jun 04, 2004 9:12 pm
Mike..Duke is a lifeguard I believe.
Edit- To whistle, I just arch my tongue with the tip of my tongue dipping down behind my lower jaw, then having a small gap inbetween my lips in line with the tip of the tongue, but higher. Then you just well, blow air through your mouth. Easy as said.

Nah, whistle blowing, not whistling.
I can't whistle by the way
