The Usul is a squirrel-like Neopet released on November 15, 1999 as one of the original Neopets on the site. Usuls are loyal and friendly pets who prefer to live in trees. During cold weather, Usuls are the first to share their food with friends. They also enjoy grooming, and are very proud of being Usuls (the default Usul petpage mentions "Usul Power!" several times).

The Usul began to receive large attention on June 7, 2001, with the release of Usuki Dolls and Usukiland, an item type and shop which focuses solely on Usul-type items. The Usul can also be painted the Usuki colour, which is unique to the Usul with the Usuki Paint Brush. Because of its affiliation with Usuki, the Usul is to date the most featured Neopet in all of the items in Neopets, with newer Usuki being added every year, including on August 20, the Annual Usuki Doll Convention. The name possibly comes from a mix of the words "usagi" (meaning rabbit in Japanese) and "squirrel".

In the Neopets Trading Card Game, Usuls are associated with the element of Earth.

Battledome

In the Battledome, Usuls have a 20% resistance to dark attacks. They are vulnerable to fire and water, receiving 20% more damage from each. They also have three species abilities:

• Usul Growl - Attack: 2 x Earth, 2 x Dark; Defence: none; available from level 1;
• Usul Glare - Attack: 2 - 3 x Fire, 2 - 3 x Dark; Defence: none; available from level 1;
• Usul Bite - Attack: 1 - 2 x Physical; Defence: none; available from level 1.

There are also fifteen pieces of equipment that can only be used by an Usul.

Trivia

• As of March 2011, over 8 million Usul's have been created, ranking them 12th of 54 Neopets in popularity. They are also featured in 387 different items (266 of which are Usuki related items).
• The Usul has gone through one redesign; voting for it ended on on August 29, 2000, and the new version was released August 31.
