The Jetsam (from jetsam, cargo jettisoned from a ship in distress) are shark-like marine Neopets released at the founding of the site. They are vicious and always eager for a fight, even at the bottom of the ocean. They are capable hunters, who can sense their prey even in dark waters, and can smell a Neopoint from half a mile away.

Jetsam have been known to hunt Flotsam - by 3 March 2001, Flotsam numbers were so low that they became Limited Edition. This overhunting meant the Jetsams began to run out of food: by 17 May, Jetsams had replaced Flotsams as Limited Edition. Though they can be mean, when befriended, Jetsam make a powerful ally.

In the Neopets Trading Card Game, Jetsam are associated with the element of water.

Battledome

In the Battledome, Jetsam have no natural resistances, but do have six species abilities:

• Jetsam Snap - Attack: 1 - 2 x Physical; Defence: none; available from level 3;
• Jetsam Splash - Attack: 2 x Water, 1 - 2 x Darkness; Defence: none; available from level 13;
• Jetsam Growl - Attack: 2 - 3 x Air, 2 - 3 x Physical; Defence: none; available from level 20;
• Jetsam Flash - Attack: 3 x Light; Defence: none; available on Jetsam Day only;
• Jetsam Typhoon - Attack: 3 x Air, 2 x Water; Defence: none; available on Jetsam Day only from level 15;
• Jetsam Water Shield - Attack: none; Defence: 0 - 4 x Water; available on Jetsam Day only from level 15.

There are also sixteen pieces of equipment than can only be used by Jetsam.
