Paint brushes change the colour of a Neopet. They can be bought at user's shops and Auctions, and are also found in the Hidden Tower and by Random Events. They are sometimes given away as prizes from games and competitions. There are also Petpet paint brushes, which change the colour of a Petpet.

In addition to providing new colours for your pet, some paint brush colours seem more costume-like and fanciful, such as Halloween, Plushie and Tyrannian. Some paint brushes are rarer than others, but aside from the no-trade starter brushes, they all rank expensive items.

To use a paint brush on a pet, the colour scheme that the brush represents must be one that the pet can become. The pet must be taken to the Rainbow Pool, where its waters allow the brush to work. Paint brushes can only be used once.

Non-Paint brush Painting

Paint brushes can change a pet into most of its available colours, but not necessarily all. Some of the more elabourate colours are only available via the Lab Ray: robot, clay, and MSP being examples of such. Any colour (except Royal, Pirate and Baby) can be given by the lab ray without need of a paint brush. Additionally, the only away of obtaining a mutant pet is to feed it a transmogrification potion.

Often, morphing potions are available to change a Neopet into a different species and/or colour, which are, for some of the more popular combinations, a much cheaper option that a paint brush.

Retired Paint Brushes

Very rarely, a paint brush colour is retired. The paint brushes become unusable (and in the case of the Unicorn brush, disappear completely) and pets painted the retired colour no longer remain it, but may be changed to a newer version. An example of this occurred on the 8th of January, 2002, when the Glass Paint Brush was retired, and replaced with the Tyrannian Paint Brush. Some of the glass pets were turned into the newer Tyrannian versions (the Shoyru was one of the first Tyrannian Pets), while the others remained as glass pets as a Tyrannian version was being made for each of them. The list of retired brushes is:

  • Unicorn (vanished completely)
  • Glass (retired item)
  • Stone (retired item)

Note that, if the actual paint brush (as an item) is retired, it does not always mean it cannot be used. Paint brushes such as the Lost Desert Paint Brush, the Faerie Paint Brush, the Gold Paint Brush are retired (along with many more in the list above) (rarity 180), but may still be used, and The Neopets Team are constantly making these paint brushes useable on more and more Neopets.
