The faeries are an all-female race of magical creatures that inhabit Neopia. They were first introduced to the Neopets website on January 14, 2000. Faeries are humanoid in appearance and have slightly pointed ears. With the exception of the mermaid-like Water Faeries, all faeries have a pair of wings on their back that give them the ability to fly. If these wings are removed, the Faerie loses its power and becomes a Grey Faerie.

Although they can be found in many places across Neopia, faeries are most readily encountered in Faerieland, a kingdom ruled over by Fyora the Faerie Queen. Some faeries set quests for players, rewarding them for retrieving certain items. Players may also encounter Bottled Faeries, Faeries that have been captured by Balthazar, that will bless a Neopet if freed by them.

As magical creatures, Faeries are capable of changing their size from being larger than most Neopets to being small enough to be caught in a bottle. Their size is also indicative of their power: large faeries tend to be more powerful faeries. Faeries have played roles as heroes and villains Neopian history: for example, the Space Faerie saved Neopia from Dr. Sloth's mutation ray, Queen Fyora imprisoned The Darkest Faerie for a thousand years, Psellia rescued Jeran during the Battle for Meridell. Furthermore, as discovered during the course of The Faeries' Ruin plot, the magic of the faeries keeps mysterious dark wraiths from invading the land.

Types

The most common faeries are associated with one of six elements:

Air Faeries Dark Faeries

Earth Faeries Fire Faeries

Light Faeries Water Faeries

More powerful elemental faeries used to be called Uber faeries, and it was these faeries specifically that gave out Faerie Quests. There are also several unique faeries that do not simply belong to an elemental type:

Aethia, the Battle Faerie Delina, the Crafting Faerie Fyora, the Faerie Queen Jhuidah, the Island Faerie

Kari, the Negg Faerie Mira, the Space Faerie Taelia, the Snow Faerie Zaira, Kari's assistant

The Library Faerie The Soup Faerie The Tooth Faerie

Lastly, when a faerie losses her wings and her magical powers, she becomes a Grey Faerie.

Bottled Faeries

Main article: Bottled Faerie

Sometimes, an unfortunate faerie will be captured by Balthazar the bounty hunter and imprisoned in a small glass bottle. These bottled faeries act as tradable items on the Neopets website. There are six types of bottled faeries, each of which correspond to one of the six types of faeries that inhabit Neopia. If a Neopet releases a faerie from its bottle prison, the newly freed faerie will bless the Neopet with a special ability that can be used in the Battledome.

Faerie Quests

Main Article: Faerie Quest

Faeries may ask for items from players in return for rewards like stat increases or new paint colours. Originally, users could request to do a Faerie Quest but they became random events on October 2nd, 2000. These quests have no time limit but the Shop Wizard cannot be used until they are completed or declined.

In February 2011 and 2012, the faeries ran an event where players could visit to be granted a quest a day to help Faerieland rebuild.

Three other faeries ask for items, but under a time limit and do not stop you from searching the Shop Wizard. These are Jhudora's Bluff, Illusen's Glade, and the Snow Faerie quests.

Trivia

• Early faerie artwork did not have faces - although The Neopets Team explained that faeries have always had faces, they just hadn't always drawn them.
