Food are items which can be fed to a users Neopet to reduce their hunger. Food is a basic need for Neopets, and the first shop in Neopia is the Food Shop.
Food items are one of the most diverse kinds of items. There are the the cheap, (omelettes and jelly), the expensive (Gourmet Food), and the odd (Gross Food).
Food Types
Besides the basic Food category of food items, there are many different categories of food which come from different worlds and shops.
Baked
Baked items are items like bakery & pastry. Sandwiches are also listed in Baked items, so there are bread items as well. As of June 2009, there are ("number needed") baked items.
Candy
Basically, this is your chocolates and a few fruity candies here and there, or both. Buying a gourmet item from the shop will earn you an avatar.
Pizza
Pizza items are... well, pizza. Some can be eaten in many slices, while others can be eaten in only one bite. The main shop for pizza is Pizzaroo.
Gross Food
Gross food is a special type of food that you don't see too much of in the regular shops. However, they can be obtained in many different ways, like in the dailies. Due to their easy to get nature, gross foods are often extremely cheap, especially on the shop wizard. An odd quirk is that when searched, gross foods do not have a "see if this item is in stock" or "find this item in the shop wizard" sign. But don't let that deter you from getting one if you need it (may be a kitchen quest requirement). You will usually find these under 100 NP in peoples' shops. If you feed your Neopet with Gross Food, they will gross out, saying gross words such as "Yuck!" of "That was horrible :(".

Healthy Food
This is a pretty straight forward category. It includes veggies like broccoli and leeks. What you find at the health food shop is for the most part (except for Neopets food) is much what you may find in a health food store--lots of fresh fruits and veggies, vitamins, veggie burgers, granola bars, etc.
Slushie
A slushie is basically the same thing as a smoothie except that it looks different and does not come in different sizes. Some slushies look very odd.
Tropical Food
These foods are sold on Mystery Island and are the centerpiece to Gadgadsbogen. There are quite a number of tropical foods, with new ones released every year around March 4th. Usually, there are a number of tropical foods retired on Gadgadsbogen, replaced with the new ones released on that day.
Space Food

Aquatic Food
Food which is bought from Maraqua. As of July 2008, the only store which sells Aquatic food is Kelp, though there used to be an official store in Old Maraqua, and some food items are given out as prizes for such things as the Advent Calender. Food of this type is sometimes confused with food which comes from Underwater Fishing, though food from there is of the basic subtype "Food".
Smoothie
Smoothies are foods that come in different sizes, such as small, medium, large, and mega. Several smoothie flavours are very gross yet not considered a gross food.
Snow Food
Snow Food is basically food that looks like it's been sculpted from snow or has snow in it or on it. Snow Foods can be bought from the Super Happy Icy Fun Snow Shop. Beware of that Lenny though, if you haggle with him over something for too long he will eventually say something rude like "BEGONE!" Just how is that supposed to be a way to attract customers?
Tyrannian Food
Tyrannian Food is usually prehistoric/dinosaur-themed and most of it can be bought at the Tyrannian Foods shop. Omelettes from the Giant Omelette also fall into this category.

Hot Dog
These are sold by Hubert in the hot dog store, located at the Neopian Bazaar. It includes some exotic flavours and toppings not usually found in a hot dog, but Hubert also sells foods you might find at the hot dog stand on the street, like corn dogs, jacket potatoes, and anything else that may include a hot dog somewhere in it.
Desert Food
Desert Food was released on June 21, 2001, along with the release of the Lost Desert. They are bought from Foods of the Lost Desert and also given by Coltzan's Shrine, and the Fruit Machine. Some Desert Food is damaged, burned or lowered in value in some way, and are therefore sold at a much lower price.

Jelly Food
Jelly food, unlike many other types of food, can only be bought in Jelly World. These incorporate many foods that are just made of jelly, and a large portion of it consists of jellies that you can take for free, just like the giant omelette, once a day. These jellies are 2 servings, and can become a stable food source for a pet. A weird thing about jelly food is that if you search for them in the search bar and then click on them and then click the "See if this item is in stock!" button, an error message comes up.
Medieval Food
Medieval food usually consists of gruel, stones, berries that you can get from Pick Your Own, etc., which most can be purchased at (usually) low prices at Meridell Foods with the exception of the Pick Your Own berries.

Kiko Lake food usually consists of edible flavoured rocks.

Exotic Foods
The newest food category to Neopia as of 2007, with Asian-themed foods like wasabi, or a variety of sushis, and so on. They can be purchased at the Exotic Foods shop in Shenkuu.
Soup Faerie
For those too poor to afford food for their pet, the Soup Faerie will fill their needs. People with under 3000 NP can visit the Soup Faerie in the Neopian Marketplace and have their pets fed for free. The Soup Faerie can't be fooled, she knows how much money you have in the bank as well as your shop till.
Gourmet Food
Gourmet foods are expensive foods that count for the Gourmet Club. Gourmet foods that a pet has eaten are automatically kept track of. Pets that have eaten the most gourmet food get a trophy or an honorary member card on their user page. Remember, gourmet foods must have a rating of 90-100 and are consequently very difficult to get, although there are a few that are cheap.
Eating For Free
It is quite easy for a user to feed their Neopets from dying to bloated without spending much NP, due to the fact Neopets creates more food each day than is actually feed to Neopets. there are also places which feed your Neopets without having to use any items or very little NP.
