Paint brushes can change a pet into most of its available colours, but not necessarily all. Some of the more elabourate colours are only available via the [[Lab Ray]]: robot, clay, and [[MSP]] being examples of such. Any colour (except Royal) can be given by the lab ray without need of a paint brush. Additionally, the only away of obtaining a mutant pet is to feed it a transmogrification potion.
 
Often, morphing potions are available to change a Neopet into a different species and/or colour, which are, for some of the more popular combinations, a much cheaper option that a paint brush.
 
==Retired Paint Brushes==
Very rarely, a paint brush colour is retired. The paint brushes become unusable (and in the case of the Unicorn brush, disappear completely) and pets painted the retired colour no longer remain it, but may be changed to a newer version. An example of this occurred on the 8th of January, 2002, when the Glass Paint Brush was retired, and replaced with the Tyrannian Paint Brush. Some of the glass pets were turned into the newer Tyrannian versions (the Shoyru was one of the first Tyrannian Pets), while the others remained as glass pets as a Tyrannian version was being made for each of them. Note that, if the actual paint brush (as an item) is retired, it does not always mean it cannot be used. Paint brushes such as the Lost Desert Paint Brush, the Faerie Paint Brush, the Gold Paint Brush are retired (along with many more in the list above) (rarity 180), but may still be used, and The Neopets Team are constantly making these paint brushes useable on more and more Neopets.
