Entering the Battledome, the player can choose one of their Neopets to enter a match, and either a one player opponent or another player's Neopet looking for a battle. The player must provide their own equipment for their Neopet, equipped to them from their inventory or the stats page. Only Neopets that have at least one hit point (HP), are not hungry, and are not sick may fight.

Each arena looks different but are otherwise the same.

Battledome matches are turn-based, and consist of several rounds. In each round, the player may select up to two items of their Neopet's equipment for it to use, and select a stance or ability (either species specific or a Faerie ability). Once both players have chosen, what equipment each battler used and the damage they did is displayed. Since the 2012 update, this is accompanied with battle animations. If both of the competitors still have health remaining, another round begins and this repeats. Else, the challenger with no health remaining loses and the other player is victorious. Matches may end up in a draw.

Battledome arenas
There are a total of 7 different arenas to fight in (the normal Battledome, the Stone Dome, the Ice Arena, the Island Arena, the Space Arena, the Water Arena - which was removed after the destruction of Maraqua but returned with the Curse of Maraqua plot - and the Tyrannian arena), though the only differences in battle it makes are the colour schemes of each individual Battledome. 1-Player Challengers can also only be fought in certain arenas, which reflect the theme of where they come from. This is done during those plots which involve fighting, which were:
*The Tyrannian Invasion - Tyrannian Arena
*Champions of Meridell - Battledome
*Battle for Meridell - Battledome
*Hannah and the Ice Caves - Ice Arena
*Curse of Maraqua - Water Arena
*Lost Desert Plot - Stone Dome
*The Tale of Woe - Stone Dome
*Journey to the Lost Isle - Tyrannian Arena
*The Return of Dr. Sloth - Space Arena
