Petpets (sometimes PetPets) are pets which you can attached to your Neopet. They are items, but can be attached to a Neopet, much like weaponry. Most Petpets can be purchased in official Neopian shops, but some are gained only by other activities, such as using the Cooking Pot.

For a long time, Petpets could not be painted, but this was introduced on (need date) by use of Petpet Paint Brushes at the Petpet Puddle. Later, on 3rd August 2005, the Petpet Lab Ray was introduced, which can also alter colour. Like the Neopet Lab Ray, the Petpet equivalent can alter other statistics also a Petpet's species, level and name as well as colour can be effected, and the Petpet even has a chance of being completely destroyed.
Petpetpets are usually rather expensive, and so are often viewed as a status symbol. The Petpetpet article of the Neopets Help section tells us that "Petpetpets are usually found by your Petpet. Very rarely, Petpets are able to catch one of these elusive little bugs in their mouth, and happily bring them back to their owners." If the sole source of the Petpetpets is indeed a random event, that would certainly help explain their rarity, and hence their high prices.

In addition to the Petpet Lab Ray, Petpet's can gain levels at the Petpet Battledome and by waking the Turmaculus, but levels will not be retained if removed from a Neopet.
Once obtained, a Petpetpet will attach itself to your Petpet. Simply follow the instructions below.

There are also Petpetpets, parasites that live on Petpets: they are to Petpets in the way Petpets are to Neopets.

Just a few of the Petpetpets available

A Petpetpet is pet for a Petpet. Many of them resemble insects, leading many to believe that these critters are actually parasites of Petpets, much like real-world fleas and ticks. As of May 31, 2006, there are 29 Petpetpets in existence.

Once obtained, a Petpetpet will attach itself to your Petpet. Simply follow the instructions below.

 1. Make sure that the Petpet you want to add the Petpetpet to is attached to your active pet.
 2. Place the Petpetpet in your inventory.
 3. Refresh your inventory until the Petpetpet disappears.

Assuming that the dissapearance was not the fault of the Pant Devil, the Petpetpet should now be attached to the Petpet of your active pet.

In the unlikely incident that you wish to remove the Petpetpet, you will need to unequip your Petpet. This can be achieved by clicking on the Petpet on your Quick Ref page and selecting "Stop Playing with (Petpet's name)." You will lose the Petpetpet, however, so be sure this is really what you want to do before you do it.
