In a thieves' guild somewhere, an old Korbat | In a thieves' guild somewhere, an old Korbat comes across an ancient manuscript mentioning a large stone hidden in Terror Mountain. It is called the Heart of the Mountain, purported to possess the powers of eternal life. The writing also tells of a "key to the heart deep within a tomb" with strange markings on it. Intrigued, the leader of the guild, Galem, orders his best thieves on a hunt for the gem. He sends Valin the Quick on a "special mission."
Meanwhile, Hannah | Meanwhile, famed adventurer Hannah is in a tavern boasting of her many deeds. A cloaked Gelert named Kanrik approaches her; he believes she can save his sister, who is dying of a plague affecting his entire village. He shows her a piece of parchment with symbols similar to the ones on the old Korbat's manuscript. Hannah has seen them before in the Lost Desert. Although at first reluctant, she agrees to help when Kanrik gives her a generous amount of gems, promising more later.
They arrive at the Lost Desert. Kanrik explains how his village got infected: at first it was just one or two it began to spread.

As they are walking, Kanrik starts to slip off a ledge, but is hastily helped up by Hannah. Around the campfire that night, Kanrik describes his sister, who loved to sing and dance. Since the onset of the plague, however, she barely has the energy to whisper. Hannah comforts a despondent Kanrik.
They find their way to an ancient tomb. Carved into the walls are markings that read, "A demi-god of awesome power lays within." Hannah effortlessly evades every booby trap. At one point she thinks she hears something behind them, but quickly dismisses it. Eventually they find their way to the inner chamber, where she accidentally triggers a secret button on the floor. The giant Mark of Ta-Kutep on a slab of rock lights up, and her arm is branded with a matching symbol. Stunned, Hannah slips off a ledge, and Kanrik reveals his true colors: he allows her to fall. His two accomplices, alerted by her screams, appear.
Now alone, injured, and hurt by the fresh betrayal, Hannah bandages herself up. Further up, Kanrik and his associates attempt to loot the tomb, but they find only a coffin. The three thieves take it with them and hurry to meet with Galem at Terror Mountain. Hannah climbs back up and enters the now-empty room. As she dusts off the mysterious markings engraved in the walls, she finds a secret compartment that holds a large, red gem. When she returns to the village, she meets with the Lost Desert Medicine doctor, who explains that the marking on her arm is a curse that cannot be healed through normal means. Hannah insists it is "just a burn" and decides to go after Kanrik at Terror Mountain.
Meanwhile on Terror Mountain, Valin feigns exhuastion at Taelia's door. She carries him inside, believing him to be a "lost soul." To her surprise, he jumps up and begins wreaking havoc in her home. He blasts her with her own wand, encasing her in a block of ice. Assured that the Snow Faerie is indeed immobilized, Valin escapes through a window.
The effects of the cursed mark is taking their toll on Hannah, who collapses in the snow. The red gem, which she now wears around her neck, begins to glow. Fortunately, a strange creature named Armin comes to rescue her. He tells her the tale of the Boris, hundreds of whom once lived within the mountain. However, a terrible, treasure-greedy beast, implied to be the Bringer of Night, appeared and killed many of them. Their leader, the Keeper of Time, cast a spell of protection on his people, trapping them in ice. A magical gem called the Heart of the Mountain kept them safe. The monster too seeks the gem, but for a different purpose. Armin is unsure what has happened to his people since. He explains that he woke up a few days ago, alone, with that story running through his head.
Valin reports his success to Galem and his lover, Masila. She decides to go out and encourage the thieves.
After taking her leave from Galem, Masila gathers a few trusted aides and finds Kanrik. She tells him that the great monster within will help them oust Galem and seize control of the thieves themselves. Kanrik, however, is not convinced, alluding to a past attempt to take over the guild. Masila's attempts to persuade him come to naught, and he initially refuses to betray Galem. However, her sly words begin to tempt him, and by the time he awakens from his sleep, he is determined to open the sarcophagus. From it emerges the Bringer of Night, a massive Moehog that refuses to heed anyone. It attacks the thieves, aided by its soldiers made of ice. They fight all night, but there appears to be no end in sight. However, as dawn breaks, the light of the sun melts the soldiers. Galem seizes his chance to broker a deal with the Bringer, offering to help him find a way into the mountain.
Enraged, Galem threatens to kill Kanrik for his error. Masila intercedes and offers an alternative: banishment. She forces Kanrik to drink a poisonous blue potion. Hours later, he finds himself alone in a frozen tundra with a light in the distance, which turns out to be Armin and Hannah's campfire. They react violently to his presence, and during the ensuing scuffle, a secret passage further into the mountain is revealed. Hannah, however, is too weak for a prolonged fight, and Kanrik manages to apologize and share his story. Together, they agree that alerting the Boris within the mountain is a priority, despite their mutual reservations.
Both parties reach the Bori chamber at the same time. Kanrik instructs Hannah and Armin to hide, while Galem and his men have made considerable progress in the caverns using their digging machines. There, they find frozen Boris and the Heart of the Mountain. The Bringer reappears and summons his ice soldiers again. As a battle rages, the Keeper of Time recognizes Hannah's pendant as the Keystone, and urges her to unite it with the Heart, but she needs the help of her companions to reach it.

Kanrik and Galem find each other in battle and begin a deadly duel in which Galem falls. Hannah reaches the Heart, and just as the Bringer is about to slay her, she unites the Keystone. A red mist fills the chamber, and the Keeper of Time calls in a hoard of Boris with his horn. Seeing the signs of trouble, Masila slips away. With the help of their newfound allies, they fight back against the Bringer. However, he strikes and smashes the Heart of the Mountain, a move that freezes him solid. Armin shatters the monster with a single, well-aimed pebble from his slingshot. Without their master, the ice army melts, and the remaining thieves elect to run. Hannah collapses from the power of the curse. Her friends rush her to Taelia, the only one with the power to help her. From a distance, Masila watches them in disgust and swears vengeance against Hannah and Kanrik.
The Keeper of Time frees Taelia from ice, and in turn, Taelia lifts Hannah's curse. The mark, however, will remain forever.
With Galem gone, Kanrik | With Galem gone, Kanrik assumes leadership of the Thieves' Guild, while the Bori is reinitiated into Neopia. Hannah, meanwhile, returns to telling stories of her adventures in Krawk Island taverns.
