Sludging is the work of Dr. Frank Sloth, and items that are turned to sludge cannot be restored. Items in your Safety Deposit Box are safe from sludging, so most players recommend keeping your valuables safely stowed there.
Items can also be turned into a Pile of Sludge by the Wheel of Misfortune. In fact, landing on this "prize" will earn you the Wheel of Misfortune avatar.
