Fifty-six avatars are automatically available to use, and an additional two hundred seventy-three secret avatars must be unlocked in various ways. These ways include playing games, visiting specific pages, and random events.It is reconmended for you to visit the Battlepedia for certain avaters(35 or so)

• Nabile: Have a ring, any ring, in your inventory and visit Nabile's Neopedia entry
• Back Off!: Visit a Mutant Draik's lookup
• Look What I Caught: Catch a Titanic Giant Squid in the Underwater Fishing game
• Faerie: Visit a Faerie Pteri's lookup
• Neomail Addict: Sign up for Neopets Premium OR refresh your Neomail inbox a lot
• Its Alive: Visit a Faellie's lookup
• Not For Wreathale: Visit a Wreathy's lookup
• Snorkle: Feed your pet a Snorkle Snout
• Pwned By the Ray: Have the Lab Ray change the species of one of your pets
• Tooth Faerie or Dr. Sloth: Have these characters visit you through a Random Event; these are separate avatars
• Snotty: Defeat Meuka in the Battledome
• A Splode: Lose to Balthazar in the Battledome
• Pink: Feed popcorn to a Pink pet
• Mew: Feed 75 Kadoaties at the Kadoatery
• Ouch: Score 3500 in Volcano Run
• Symol: Get an item from the Symol Hole
• Happy Birthday: Visit the news page on November 15 Visit on YOUR birthday.
