The '''Down for Maintenance Pteri''' is a [[Red]] [[Pteri]] and a [[1-Player Challengers|one-player challenger]] that users can fight in the [[Battledome]].  He is based off of an image of a Red Pteri that is shown when the [[Neopets|Neopets website]] is down for maintenance.

For many years, the screen that is displayed when the Neopets website is unavailable has included generic, crying Red Pteri.  After a while, users began to associate this Red Pteri with the frustration of not being able to access the website.  In [http://www.neopets.com/newnt/index.phtml?section=editorial&week=146 Editorial #146] of the [[Neopian Times]], Neopets user [http://www.neopets.com/userlookup.phtml?user=tonya1982 Tonya1982] asked [[TNT]] to make the "Neopets is Down For Maintenance Pteri" into a Battledome challenger so that Neopets users could "take their frustrations out on him".  TNT granted this request, and on July 27, 2004, the Down for Maintenance Pteri was released as an official Battledome challenger.

The first time a user receives this event, they will unlock the Down for Maintenance Pteri as a [[1-player challenger|challenger]] in the [[Battledome]]. Otherwise, this event has no effect.
The Down for Maintenance Pteri was originally an un-named Pteri, but became known as the Pteri seen when Neopets puts up the "Down for Maintenance". The Pteri was shown as a normal crying Pteri to show what Neopets being down does normal users. After users began to ask to fight the Down for Maintenance Pteri in the [[Battledome]] for a sense of revenge due to the annoyance the Pteri caused (most notably an editorial qustion in the [[Neopian Times]] on [http://www.neopets.com/newnt/index.phtml?section=editorial&week=146 May 11, 2003]), The Neopets Team released a [[Random Event]] on July 27, 2004, in which it would challenge users. It was given a new appearance as well, this one appearing menacing and evil, as if it were the cause of Neopets being down for maintenance.
 
Besides these appearances, it's also possible the Red Pteri shown in the "Neopets Hints" box of official Neopets [[shop]]s is the very same Pteri.
