Avatars are icons that can be used on Neopian message boards. There are several default avatars which are provided to players automatically, and there are many secret avatars that can be collected.  To find these, users must perform some task, such as getting a high score at a flash game, visiting a particular page (clickable avatars), or equipping their pet with a special weapon.  Some avatars may be very expensive, such as using a Nerkmid which can cost upwards of 80,000 NP, or obscure or difficult to obtain.  There is a high score list, listing the users with the most avatars.
 
Avatars on neopets can be hard or easy to find. Most avatars released onto the site are clickable avatars (where you have to view a certain page), but then some avatars you must work for.... e.g the [[snowmuncher]] avatar
To get this avatar you will have to score 5000 more in the game snow muncher.
 
Avatars are used on the neopets message boards and are displayed next to your username and others that have posted on the boards.  You can change you avatar by going to the boards and clicking chat prefrences.
 
Some users like to show of how many avatars they have while other users accept that they will never get many!
