The Games Room is a section of the Neopets website where users can find and play Neopets themed browser games.  While a few older games are simply implemented in HTML, most games in the Games Room require the user to have Flash installed on their computer. There are also a handful of games that require Shockwave and 3DVIA Player.

Games are divided in the Gameroom and into three categories: puzzles, action and luck. With the exception of action games, which all require Adobe (formally Macromedia) Flash or Shockwave to play, each of these categories also has some HTML based games which can be played on machines that may be unable to play more processor-intensive games. Many of the newer games, sadly, are made in Flash or Shockwave and these require a one-time download to play. These games also tend to take a long time to download, particularly on computers with a dial-up modem, and tend to run slowly on older computers, often leading to a less enjoyable experience for people on older computers. On the other hand, computers with broadband and modern processor chips experience the benefit of better graphics, as well as embedded sound in the game.

Flash
Most of the games within Neopets are created with Flash, an animation and creation tool.

All flash games have a 1,000 NP limit per game play, and can be won 3 times per day. Not all games can reach this 1,000 NP limit, such as Usuki Frenzy and Sponsor Games, due to the low points to NP ratio. This 1,000 NP limit can be surpassed by the daily Featured Game, in which a non-sponsored flash game rewards double the NP to a maximum of 2,000 NP. The neopoints received from games can also be doubled by having Lutari beads or the Space Faerie lucky charm.

Some flash games require use of the mouse to play, either as a secondary controller our through complete gameplay. Mouse-controlled games include: Crisis Courier, Kiko Match II, Meepit Juice Break, Shenkuu Warrior. Some games give the player the option to use either the mouse or the keyboard to control it, such as Feed Florg.

HTML
The remainder of the games are played through basic HTML/PHP programming. Popular examples of these types of games are Pyramids, Round Table Poker, Cellblock and NeoQuest.

These types of games are an alternative to users who are incapable of playing flash games because of computer limitations.

While most of the games have specific limits to how much NP can be gained per day, there are a few games which are exempt from the rule, such as Guess the Card, Word Poker and Neopoker.

Games labeled as a Board Game are played primarily on flat 2D playing field, with pieces moving about the board in the spaces provided. The most recognized of these types of games is Kacheekers, a Neopets version of Checkers. Games like this require an understanding of the game and their rules, usually creating a strategy to win. Not all games are played with simple pieces, and can include RPG elements such as Invasion of Meridell and the NeoQuest games, while other games require a different playing field than a basic board game, such as the Battledome and Stock Market. As of December 2006, only five games under this category are played in flash, while the rest (eight) are web based.

A Sponsor Game is a game created as an advertisement for products in the real world, paid for by companies. Some sponsor games may have Neopets starring in them, while others feature characters and thems specifically from the sponsored product. Because they are not official games, they have no high score tables, but a high score will still be posted in the users high score list. Sponsor games are featured on the site for a limited time only, after which they are removed. Over time, sponsor games have made up over half of all total games playable on Neopets, and a list of all of them can be seen here.
Sports Games
Sports Games are games that involve playing a specific sport, such as Wingoball.
