In October of 2004, [[The Neopets Team]] began releasing themed skins for the Neopets website. At first these skins were called "sidebar themes", since they altered the appearance of the distinct yellow sidebar that was displayed on the left side of the website at that time. As part of the [[Neopets 2.0]] upgrade, the layout of the Neopets website was completely overhauled and the sidebar was removed entirely.  Because of this, sidebar themes were updated and redesigned into "site themes" that matched the website's new layout.

To make the website more festive, on certain holidays [[The Neopets Team]] will override the user's chosen site theme with a holiday appropriate one. All users will see this holiday site theme for the duration of the day, even if they have not otherwise unlocked the theme for normal use. Site Themes are themed skins for the Neopets website. While a handful of site themes are available to users by default, most site themes must be unlocked by performing certain actions, such as participating in a plot or redeeming a virtual prize code.

Users can change their current site theme by selecting their desired theme from the drop down menu located under the "Theme" section of their Site Preferences page.

History

Site themes were initially called "sidebar theme" when they were first introduced, due to the distinct sidebar on the left side of the Neopets page at that time.
