Overview
Gameplay
Battledoming is a turn-by-turn based affair. In each round both players may use up to two items and choose a stance or ability - with the exception of a Neopet who has run out of weapons, power to use abilities, or has been frozen.

After both players have made their move - in two player matches, there is often a delay while one user waits for the other to complete - details of the round are shown, illustrating the weapons each player used and their effects, their abilities, and the total damage performed to and healed from either pet.
Entering the Battledome, the player can choose one of their Neopets to enter a match, and either a one player opponent or another player's Neopet looking for a battle. The player must provide their own equipment for their Neopet, equipped to them from their inventory. Only Neopets that have at least one hit point (HP), are not hungry, and are not sick may fight.

Attack damage is gauged in 'icons': a more powerful attack is indicated by a greater number of icons. Icons come in seven varieties - Air, Darkness, Earth, Fire, Light, Physical, and Water - each represented by a different symbol. Certain armaments may also defend against specific types of icons should they be used during a turn it is used in. Certain weapons may also reflect a portion of the icons used against you back at the opponent.
Battledome matches are turn-based, and consist of several rounds. In each round, the player may select up to two items of their Neopet's equipment for it to use, and select a stance or ability (either species specific or a Faerie ability). Once both players have chosen, what equipment each battler used and the damage they did is displayed. Since the 2012 update, this is accompanied with battle animations. If both of the competitors still have health remaining, another round begins and this repeats. Else, the challenger with no health remaining loses and the other player is victorious. Matches may end up in a draw.

Certain items may also have additional effects to damage and defence, such as being able to generate specific items within the battle, steal an opponent's weapon for the duration of the match, heal the user - or in rare cases, the opponent - inflict an illness, or be usable only by a select species. There are a few extremely rare items that can permanently remove statistics, alter an opponent's Petpet (only one at the moment), delete weapons permanently, or change the opponent's species, colour, or gender. Some weapons will defend against 100% of a type of icon used against you, instead of a specific number of icons.
Damage is done by different numbers of elemental icons. Some equipment deals damage to the opponent, and some equipment defends against icons dealt by the opponent - many items do a combination of both. The actual damage done by a Neopet by a certain number of icons depends on that Neopet's strength stat. The amount of damage defended depends on their defence stat.

Many weapons have a variable attack, where a few additional icons may be inflicted. Defence is often variable also, with the number of icons of the types defended depending on the relationship between the user's defence and the opponents attack statistics (IDB's "Defence Explained", IDB's "A Defense of Defense"). The actual damage done by the icons that reach one's opponent is also quite complicated to calculate, being based on the stances of oneself and one's opponent and the strength statistic of one's Neopet (IDB's "A Study of Damage in the Battledome", IDB's approximate Damage Calculator.

Items also have varying reliability in the Battledome. Certain items can be used repeatedly throughout the rounds (Multiple Use), whereas others may break randomly - or in response to a specific stimulus - either for the duration of the battle (Semi-Fragile) or permanently (Fragile). Others may be used only once (Single Use) or once in a battle (Once per battle) - these are often referred to as bombs if they have a high attack.
where x is the damage received by a Neopet, ia the number of icons the Neopet received, ir the number of icons they reflected, ib the number of icons they blocked (of the icons the opponent used, not the number their equipment is capable of blocking), s their opponent's strength multiplier, and d their own defence multiplier.

Some attacks may freeze an opponent for a round (or in rare cases, several) during which they cannot attack or defend, but can be attacked.
As a worked example, suppose a Neopet with a strength stat of 125 uses the Scroll of Flame Strike. This weapon does three icons of fire and three icons of physical, and a strength stat of 125 corresponds to a multiplier of 3. Hence, the damage this attack will do is (3+3) x 3 = 18.

If your pet has more HP then their maximum--like if the Healing Faerie gave them more than enough HP during a visit--then these extra HP are used in battle. However, the first time your pet takes damage (as in most likely the first turn), all of these extra HP disappear and your pet is returned to base HP (or less if it was more damage than extra HP). (Info courtesy of an answered board question here.)
If the opponent uses a Leaf Shield in the same round, this block the three icons of physical damage but not the three icons of fire damage. If their defence stat is also 125, then the damage they receive is reduced by 3 x 3 = 9, and they receive 18 - 9 = 9 HP of damage. However, if the opponent had a defence stat of 300 - corresponding to a multiplier of 6.5 - then the three icons they block would be worth 3 x 6.5 = 19.5 HP, and their damage is reduced to 0 (damage does not go negative), even though the three fire icons got passed the shield.

Battledome Arenas
In the old Battledome, at the end of the match the winner's health is restored to full. This no longer happens in the new Battledome, but the player can now earn Neopoints and items from battling one player challengers.

Equipment
Equipment comprises of all the weapons and armour a Neopet may use in. They are bought, sold, or found like all other items, and are equipped to the player's Neopet from the inventory. Up to eight Battledome items may be equipped to a Neopet at any time. They are the main means a Neopet has of dealing damage to and defending against their opponent.

The player may choose up to two items to use each round. The damage they deal and defend against corresponds to the Neopet's stats and the number of icons the equipment does - see the worked example above.

Some items of equipment can heal the Neopet. Only one healing item may be equipped at a time (though there are some exceptions to this with items that heal but are not classed as healing items, such as Illusens Mud Mixture). Other items can freeze their opponent - this is not to be confused with The Neopets Team 'freezing' an account for rules violations, rather, this prevents the opponent from using any equipment or abilities next turn.

Some items reflect icons back at the Neopet that dealt it. These icons use the original Neopet's attack multiplier, not the attack multiplier of the Neopet using the reflector - essentially, using a reflector makes the opponent attack themselves. These icons are removed from the defender's damage calculation. Other items steal an opponent's weapon for the duration of the match - originally they stole the first item in the opponent's equipment list, since the 2012 update they steal a random item.

Equipment may be multiple use, able to be used over and over, single use, that expire after being used once, fragile, that may break after a few uses, or once per battle, that can only be used once in a battle but are returned for the next round. Certain exotic weapons can cause changes that persist outside of the Battledome: Chia Flour turns the enemy into a Yellow Chia, the Eraser of the Dark Faerie permanently deletes a random one of the opponent's weapons, and the Lab Ray Scientist has a weapon that can change a Neopet's gender.

Battledome arenas
There are a total of 7 different arenas to fight in (the normal Battledome, the Stone Dome, the Ice Arena, the Island Arena, the Space Arena, the Water Arena - which was removed after the destruction of Maraqua but returned with the Curse of Maraqua plot - and the Tyrannian arena), though the only differences in battle it makes are the colour schemes of each individual Battledome. 1-Player Challengers can also only be fought in certain arenas, which reflect the theme of where they come from. This is done during those plots which involve fighting, which were:

Trivia
Trivia
*Users were able to equip weapons to their Neopets on February 29, 2000.
*The 2007 April Fools prank said the Battledome was cancelled. Users were unable to access the Battledome Chat, the Hidden Tower, or shops that stocked weapons, until the next day. Premium members were able to access those areas if they switched to portal mode.
*The Battledome first opened its doors to the Neopian public on the 11th January 2001, after extensive alpha testing.
*The Water Arena was turned into a hidden link for the duration of the Curse of Maraqua plot, but they re-added the link on the Battledome page when the plot was over.
*An April Fools prank in 2007 involved the battledome being said to be cancelled, but it was restored the next day. Users were unable to access the Battledome Chat, the Hidden Tower, or shops that stocked weapons. The exception was Premium members, they were able to access those areas if they switched to portal mode.
*"Taking it to the Stone Dome" is a common phrase among battledomers when challenging another to fight.
