The Flotsam is an aquatic Neopet similar to the Dolphin. Released at the beginning of Neopets on November 15, 1999. The Flotsam originally resembled a Goldfish, but was changed to its current design on 22nd June 2000, subject to a few later design changes.

Flotsam enjoy swimming in the oceans and rivers of Neopia, but they can move just as well on land if they need to. They are quick, and can sense danger by studying the temperature of waters and the movement in the clouds. And even in the coldest of climates, they always find a way to have fun. Flotsam do not have the ability to breath underwater.

Flotsam became Limited Edition on 2nd and 3rd March 2001, due to the fact they were hunted by Jetsam as food. The decrease in the Flotsam population had a direct effect on the Jetsam who now did not have enough food to sustain their large numbers. As a result, Jetsam replaced the Flotsam on the list of limited edition species on May 17, 2001. In the Neopets Trading Card Game, Flotsam are associated with the element of water.

Battledome

In the Battledome, Flotsam have no natural resistances, however they do have six species abilities:

• Flotsam Flip - Attack: none; Defence: 1 - 4 x Water; available from level 1;
• Flotsam Whap - Attack: 2 x Water; Defence: none; available from level 1;
• Flotsam Flourish - Attack, Defense: does not do anything; available from level 1;
• Flotsam Fountain - Attack: 2 Air, 2 Water; Defence: none; available on Flotsam Day only;
• Flotsam Splash - Attack: 2 Water; Defence: none; available on Flotsam Day only;
• Flotsam Water Shield - Attack: none; Defence: all Water (not confirmed); available on Flotsam Day only.

There are also eighteen pieces of equipment that can only be used by a Flotsam.

• As of March 2010, there are over 4.3 million Flotsam created on Neopets, placing them 23rd out of 54 Neopets in popularity. They are also featured in 114 items.
• Flotsam is a real life word which describes items which are floating on the water, like items after a shipwreck (read Flotsam and jetsam for more information).
