Paint brushes change the colour of a Neopet. They can be bought at user's shops and auctions, and are also found in the Hidden Tower and by Random Events. They are sometimes given away as prizes from games and competitions. There are also Petpet paint brushes, which change the colour of a Petpet.

In addition to providing new colours for your pet, some paint brush colours seem more costume-like and fanciful, such as Halloween, Plushie and Tyrannian. Some paint brushes are rarer than others, but aside from the no-trade starter brushes, they all rank expensive items.

To use a paint brush on a pet, the colour scheme that the brush represents must be one that the pet can become. The pet must be taken to the Rainbow Pool, where its waters allow the brush to work. Paint brushes can only be used once.
